Am I right in thinking that all stations used to be live on Christmas day until sometime in the 00s but now almost all stations are voice tracked ? I remember Ray Darcy being live on Christmas day on Today fm in the early years of his show.

When we first got independent stations here, software to even play out automatically let alone voice track was unreliable and implausibly expensive for storage - Master Control only came around in the mid 1990s even. So yes, anyone who was on-air was live.

There are still stations which will be live - generally those which are still 24h live.

Automation was the worst thing to ever happen to radio, as soon as the technology became available radio stations started using it at Christmas, now you have stations like Sunshine 106.8 that are on autopilot 20 hours a day 365 days a year.
