What is it about being different that is so hard for society to accept?

    Are you afraid of Different?

I don't think Irish society has ever been more accepting of differences, and this is a quality which I hope will only improve with time.

Variety is the spice of life, innit?

Define different? Different from birth as in say born with 6 fingers or different from life as in someone dying their hair pink?

    I am very different.
People like to think they are progressive and accepting of difference.
    Load of ****e.
People (largely) do what other people do.

Social drives are stronger than any other forces (I include sexual drives in that).

Different is bad - conform, conform!

I want to say no but I know that sometimes yes, I do sometimes be afraid of different.

Not that I want to be. I know it's good to experience diversity. It's just some things like snakes, spiders, tall heights, foods I haven't smelled before take a bit of getting used to.

I know this is AH but it IS a very good philosophical question. Or is it psychosocial question?

It probably stems from the fact people grew up in tribes eons ago and are wary of things that are different. As a form of self protection.

Like it or not, humans have instincts that are innate which originated from our far away history. Exactly in the same way that animals are born with instincts from the moment they are born.
