Patent Attorney Trainee info

I have been doing some research on the training required to become a patent attorney in Ireland. There is plenty info available on UK companies that are looking for trainees but hardly anything in relation to Ireland.

I have a background in engineering and strongly considering in going down this route if I can land a trainee position in Ireland.

Any recommended firms to apply to in Ireland or am I better to train in the UK where there are more opportunities?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

It depends where you want to work.

The UK Exams are harder. In Ireland you Apply to the Irish Patents Office in Kilkenny, research the material and case law and sit the exam. I think the pass rate was on 20% or so they year I sat it.

They are a bit of work but most patent attorneys work in firms which specialise in it and there are usually advertised trainee roles on irishjobs or somewhere like that.

You can pm me if you have specific questions

That seems a very low pass rate!

    It's a difficult exam.

There are three sections and each must be passed independently. The year I did it Part C was a very difficult section. I would even say unfair as two of the questions were pure legal questions which suited me but not the majority of candidates.
