I'm looking at a van in England a 14 Peugeot partner. I was wondering would I be able to tax it private. A friend of mine as a 08 Peugeot partner and he is able to tax it privately. I have heard if I tax it commercially I would need a vat number or herd number, even doh I am working I don't have either. All help really appreciated. Sorry if I am very confusing !!

It's taxed on engine cc if done privately.

Think private tax on any 2008 onwards diesel is cheap enough you should be fine. What's the VRT on it? Is it still a 200 euro flat rate for commercials under 3500gvw?

What you think is wrong. As Colm above has stated,it's done on the old system so a 1.6 would be €514 .

Umm so a 2008 onwards 1.6 diesel car is 270 and a 2008 onwards 1.6 van is 514? They do like to rip people off that's for sure.

Only if it's privately taxed .

You don't need to be vat registered or have a herd number as long as you're self employed, you just need to sign a declaration form at your local Garda station.

    And have commercial use insurance.

Yes, but surely that would go without saying, although I can't remember who I showed the insurance to whether it was the Gardai or the tax office?

Tax office. Garda don't need to see the insurance Cert when signing the goods declaration.
