Onkyo 717 firmware broke receiver

    Hi everyone,

I have an onkyo 717. There was no issue with the receiver but I decided to update the firmware. It had to be done by USB - onkyo recommendation.

I did this. After completion, I received an error message 3-68. I've tried it again and again. I've reset my receiver, unplugged it, reformatted the USB. Nothing. The receiver is broken.

My receiver won't output through the HDMI. The audio works but no picture.

I can't believe this. It seems crazy that an update can cause such a major issue... I hope you can help.

If anyone knows anyone who can help or fix the receiver. Please let me know.

    Thanks everyone.

When firmware fails to initialise or errors you need to get in contact with the manufacturer as they might have a workaround.
Try looking for that error code and that recover number as it may not be an isolated case, if it isn't then it's probably back to Onkyo!

Thanks for that. I've tried looking for the error code. Strange that it's so hard to find. In the one post I did find with the error, the person's receiver needed a new hdmi board chip installed. They said that the error basically means the receiver is gone 😣 I can't understand how a firmware update could do that. I've contacted onkyo and I'm waiting for a response.

Firmware rewrites the code running inside any hard ware(chips, processors etc) . Unlike when you update your phone / computer (which is software) its incredibly hard to "roll back", so in this case the firmware (according to the post you found) told the chip in the HDMI board to do something but only half told it. In doing so locked / broke the chip - rendering it useless.

Unfortunately no, it's a bit complicated and if you make a mess of it it will get worse. Waiting for Onkyo to return your mail is the best option.
