can rice go bad in sock snowmen

I want to make a sock snowman and every tutorial I have seen says to fill the sock with rice. But I am worried rice will go bad or attract insects. Should I be worried or is there an alternative that will still give the same shape and weight required to keep the snowman from falling over?

You could use pretty much any whole grain, but rice is generally the easiest to get hold of. It will not go off if it is kept dry, and there isn't usually any problem with insects.

I've always heard adding bay leafs to rice bags wards off insects.
