Speed van and overtaking...

Today on the way to work driving on a 100km road. Long road, no bends, good visibility. The car in front of me is doing 70km/80km and breaking very often then slightly speeding up to 90km so I overtook him when it was safe to do so. I only spotted the speen van when I was overtaking him and I was doing about 110km while overtaking to make sure I could clear him safely but then returned to 100km quickly after. The overtaking happened exactly at the speed van, not a couple hundred meters behind it. Should I be worrying? If I get ticketed, how soon should I expect to get the ticket in the post?

If you were in range then may have got you but all depends on threshold and what your actual speed was.

2 weeks and less depending can be more of course.

I had a similar experience and got the points. Could have disputed it but bottom line was I was speeding, albeit trying to avoid an accident. In my case there was a spate of deliberate "accidents" in the area at the time but having heard who was behind those I opted to take the points.

Many odometers over represent speed, perhaps your 110 was only 100 and you'll be ok.

    Odometers don't measure speed.

On the main land they knock 5 kph off what ever they record for cslibation purposes. Not sure if they do this on the feckin island though!!!

They actually allow 10% of a difference because speedos can be out that much by law.
Having said that if op speedo is 10% slower then he was actually doing 10% more than he thinks.
Nothing you can do now op but wait for the postman. It could be 2017 before its delivered with Christmas post.

Were you in the opposite lane as you were passing the van?

I'm more than likely wrong but I always thought the speed vans setup a virtual distance marker on one lane only and they can't cover both lanes.

Obviously a guard with a speed gun has more maneuverability and can choose a target point.

I was in similar situation and got clocked, my speed was higher though. Tried to appeal but got nowhere. Did you see light flash in the van? They always flash when taking picture.

Speed vans can cover multiple lanes and directions.

Agree. Don't think I've seen a speed camera flash in 10 or 15 years. Back then the camera actually contained film that had to be removed and developed. I think it could take 80 photos on a roll. You had something like a 90% chance of the camera not having film when you saw the double flash. Ah the good old days. :)
