Keeping a valid handicap

What are the prerequisites for keeping a "C" Status (Competition) Handicap?

Mine is currently C Status. I intend to play 4 competitions in Singles Opens next year. Is that sufficient to maintain a C Status handicap into 2018? Or do I need to play some qualifying rounds in my home club?

If I gave up my membership, or if I downgrade to House membership with effect start 2017, would that have any impact on my handicap in 2017 or 2018?

You are good for next year, but if you don't have current membership then you wouldn't have a live GUI number so shouldn't be able play any open comps.
You need to play 3 comps on your home course to have a current handicap.

I'll still have a membership come 2018, albeit one that does not give me golfing rights. So I will have a valid GUI Number as far as I know. Are you sure that qualifying comps need to be played on your home course? I didn't think that was the case. I think it is 4 comps now.

You mean rounds I take it?

The comps at home qualify you for opens isn't it?

Pretty sure doesn't matter where you submit a card, its all the same, home course, open etc, they all contribute to handicap

I'm sure a handicap sec or someone like that must know the answer to this fairly black and white scenario.

You don't need to play any competitions to have a current handicap, you simply have to submit 3 cards to get a handicap.
You do however have to play 3 competitions in your "home" club in the previous calendar year to be eligible to play open comps, the "C" after a HC is to denote a player has fulfilled that requirement and holds a competition "C" HC.

Ok, I didn't realise the C needed the three to be home comps. Actually I thought it was 4, but maybe that is for inter club competition eligibility. Anyhow, thanks for the response. So, in relation to the OP, there's no way for me to keep handicap by playing open comps, my handicap with lapse, or whatever, going into 2018.

Correct, in order to keep the competition "c" HC in 2018 you must play at least 3 comps in your home club in 2017.

    The replies are correct afaik.

You must have submitted at least 3 scores per calendar year in either qualifying competitions, Supplementary Scores or 9 hole qualifying events to have an competition handicap(marked with a `c`).

I am pretty sure that a non competition handicap is still counted as a CONGU handicap, not sure if you can win opens on other courses but I would be surprised if you cannot play them.

Must look it up, everyday a a school day.
