Some decent fights and some big names fighting this weekend.

Good scrap at LHW tonight state side between Shabranskyy and Barrera. Barrera is the lad Ward knocked down and beat handily enough at the start of the year and Shabranskyy is another one of the big punching Eastern Europeans at 175.

Tomorrow you have obviously Povetkin/Stiverne which should be pretty interesting. I'll be interested in Povetkin's condition in comparison to before the whole drug thing. He should handle Stiverne though.

Old B-Hop is having his last fight against Joe Smith Jr. Usyk is on the same card making his first defence of his CW belt. Always a treat watching him and getting exposure in the US. Our own Jason Quigley is on the exact same card, hoping for a KO from Jason to do his rep the world of good.

Other lads fighting include NDam NJikam in his first fight after the Olympics. I mention him as interestingly Gamboa is on the same card. I'll always be a massive fan of him so I'll keep an eye out for the fight video after.

Finally, Kostya Tszyu's young fella Timothy is making his pro debut in Australia tomorrow as well.

Don't think anyone over here is showing the Povetkin fight. Here's a stream that the promoter said will be broadcasting the fight. It is 5 hours ahead, so Povetkin should be in the ring around 17:50.

Trying to remember when Wilder fought Stiverne. Was it a cagey enough affair? Was either wobbled or close to been stopped. I just remember Wilder keeping everything at range but my memory of the fight is hazy.

I read that the french card is on canal + . Feel free to put up a stream for that. It's a good card. Gamboa has criminally suffered from a lack of promotion.

Wilder-Stiverne was a very decent scrap, and Wilder boxed excellently against a game Stiverne.

Yeah Wilder/Stiverne was a good fight, a good open fight which suited Wilder down to a tee. Stiverne was definitely wobbled a few times but he took some serious leather. If Povetkin knocks him out I'd be impressed, and equally sceptical.

    Povetkin failed drug test again.

Very impressive performance by Barrera last night in a good scrap. Ward's resume just got another boost.

Also lol @ Povetkin. I always knew he was juiced to the gills. People gave him a pass over the meldonium thing but one look at him since the Wlad fight would tell you he had a massive transformation. Apparently he got popped for Ostarine which is used in the bodybuilding community a lot. Increased strength and endurance while preserving lean mass gains, perfect for a boxer really.

    Here's the Barrera fight:

Well worth the 30 mins if you have it.

In other news rumours going around Povetkin will now fight Johann Duhaupas, a guy Wilder stopped late who's coming off a pretty big win against Robert Helenius. Absolute joke tbh. How Povetkin is allowed in a ring is beyond me, let alone against a guy who has 0 preparation done.

Jesus that is something else Povetkin testing positive again and didn't they waive the fact that Stiverne tested positive for something else!

I think Povetkin tested positive for some form of steroid.
Sky have a vacant tv slot for tonite so

Big KO by Povetkin. What a f*cking disgrace. He and his camp have the nerve to celebrate too.

Why was that cheating bastard allowed to fight?

Most notable thing for me is how lean Povetkin is getting with every fight, especially his face. Very impressive performance, but again telling of a guy juiced to the gills so means f*ck all. I hope Johann got a fat enough cheque to take that beating.

Shame if this is his last fight. The most talented heavyweight skill Wise by a distance. His diversity of punching is beautiful to watch. I think klitschko drove him down the dark side. I would have loved to have seen what he would of done to deontay:(

But if he drug cheat, he shouldnt box Again

    Here's the Ndam fight:

What a punch. Absolutely perfect. Late push for KO of the year.

To add to Gamboa's rotten luck, apparently his opponent failed a drug test so he didn't get to fight. Heartbreaking.

Joke the Povetkin got to fight, don't forget Stiverne failed a test and was still allowed fight, Really looking forward to seeing Jason tonight, thought he was very impressive last time out, also excited to see Usyk again he's in with a good fight too but Mcunu is very small for the weight, I don't think the Bhop fight is a forgone conclusion either the man's almost 52 hasn't fought in ages and Smith isn't a bum either.

What time will hopkins be fighting at? Im half asleep but would like to see it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

    Another hour I'd estimate

Sill 4 rounds left in this cruiserweight bout with a featherweight fight to come.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Quigley looked really good there, was only one round but he picked some lovely shots, really high on Quigley along with Conlan i expect him to really challenge at world level in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

No fairytale ending here. Halfway through and sadly cant see this going the distance.

Smith is bigger, stronger and of course younger. Hopkins has won one round and despite some great right hands is getting swarmed.

    Echoes of his last fight.

Hopkins knocked completely out of the ring in round 8

    That's it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,756 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

He wasn't pushed he got caught with 4 really hard punches the last one lifted him out of the ring, Hopkins wasn't getting KO'd even if he managed to get back in the ring, Hopkins talking about his ankle but i think he's using it to save face.

Yeah Hopkins is blantantly lying. He has seen the punch that put him out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,225 ✭✭✭Henno30

Sad and hilarious all at once. No need for B-Hop to do this anymore. That will be that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

Yeah he's saving face alright. Punched clean out of the ring and landed on his head and subsequently his rambling interview was a result of this.

But a very brave ending as Hopkins chose Smith who wasnt even born when he fought his first fight! He could have picked a dummy and gone out a winner. A step too far but his place as a legend in boxing is cemented.

An honour to see him against Kovalev and his courage that night will live long in the memory.

    Thank you Bernard

I had a few euro for Smith to win by tko/ko and paddy power hasn't paid out yet and they are normally much quicker than this, any reason for that? is the decision being disputed?

    What next for Quigley ?

BHop did us all a favour by not continuing. Just like so many fights he was doing eff all but spoiling and surviving.

There are two things for me about this fight:

    1) BHop was definitely knocked out of the ropes by punches, he can't really argue that he was shoved or that Smith did anything illegal. He should be a man about it and just say that.

    2) Why was there no protection to stop him from falling the whole way to the concrete floor? usually there are tables there to at least tier the fall to the floor. He would have been able to continue if there had been adequate safety at the ringside.

He had 20 seconds to get back into the ring. Not sure if that is the referee's count or a timekeeper's stopwatch. Anyway, not sure I saw any referee count..

Btw, he could have done himself serious injury with that drop. Bad management of the ring that.

But that's what I don't understand, walshb... When they started counting to 20 I thought I'd been transported to the WWF or something, where Hacksaw Jim Duggan would be thrown out of the ring and batter off the steel railings, yet still make it back before the 20 seconds were up...

Why is nobody questioning how a boxer could fall straight from the ring on to a concrete floor? Surely this is the real story of the night? Hopkins was probably gonna lose either way, but he surely deserved the chance to be able to get back up after the count and fight on... But the ring setup deprived him of that, and he could have had a serious brain injury with the way he fell.

Quigley looked great at the weekend. Obviously he wasn't facing a killer but he seems to have a more natural sense of the pro style than a lot of other amateurs I've seen.

Far too early to get excited but he's starting to arouse some interest.

    The ref counted alright.

The Forum doesn't actually host a lot of boxing events. Only started doing it again mid-2014 and only 5 events since then prior to the weekend. Lack of experience showed.

That could have been nasty, not the ending Hopkins wanted but he's a legend and achieved a phenomenal amount in his career. Maybe not the best to watch over the latter years of his career but you have to respect what he was doing at the age he was, winning multiple world titles at 49 is absolutely insane. Legend.
