What size turkey?

I will be cooking for five people on Christmas Day and also St Stephen's Day. So I need a turkey that is big enough for both days *and* has enough leftover for some sandwiches. What size should I go for? The web gives me a wide variety of answers, which is not helpful. For reference, it's a free range turkey.

    Thanks.

I bought mine online from Whelans in Clonmel and the guide on their site said 850g per person. Mind you I always buy bigger as I love turkey and like having some to freeze even for a few more dinners :)

12lbs to 14lbs should be about right.

10 portions plus leftovers would be a 16-18 lb turkey on the bone.

12-14 lbs would be fine. There are 4 of us & a bird that size does us for 3-4 days at least (lunches & dinner & the odd late night sambo).

24lb here for 8 adults and 2 smallies on Xmas day, would be a small bit left over for next day which would only be 5 of us but it's 5 fellas 3 ladies so higher proportion of bigger appetites

I went in to order my turkey last year, asked for a 20kg bird, butcher was like ok then, got the order book out

Asked me again was i sure i wanted a 20kg bird, "Yep, i do"

Write my name and that in the book, takes a deposit and then asks me again, i lose it a bit, "Whats the fcukin problem if i want a 20kg bird"

Then the alarm bells ring, and i sheepishly ask him how big a 20kg turkey would be, he holds his 2 hands very far apart

    "I'll be having a 20lb bird then"

Gone for a safe 8kg this year, wife made me double check my weights and measures before i went out and ordered it

I'm not great with weights, but I do know that I cooked for 7 people a few years ago, and a 12-14lb bird was just about sufficient for the meal. We may have had leftovers for a couple of sandwiches, but there definitely wasn't a lot.
