Aer Lingus at Dulles

    Hi.

I'm looking at booking a flight to the US next year and connecting onward with United.

I do this route often and have always connected at O'Hare but, on the dates chosen, the return is significantly cheaper by going through Dulles. However, connection time is on 1h 5mins.

Now, I wouldn't dream of leaving this little time at O'Hare but, I believe that Aer Lingus use the same pier as United at Dulles and so I should be able to just from one gate straight to the other without having to go landside. I believe there is an airside transfer between the piers too, if it were at the second one.

Does anyone have any experience of an Aer Lingus to United transfer at Dulles?

I transferred through Dulles on a flight from Dublin and an onward United connection. The piers are different, and you have to get a bus/train from 1 pier to another. Its a pretty small airport compared to O'Hare. I had lots of time to spare on a 1 hr 55 min stop-over. 1 hr 5 min is certainly tight. Signage at the airport is poor, so check out where you need to go in advance. Good luck !!

I always look to when the next flight to the destination is or how many more there are that day, so if I miss the connection, when is my next option

Unfortunately, both flights are the only options from those airports on that day.

If the 1h05m is offered as a single ticket you should be fine. Have you looked at using United direct to Dulles (departs 15-20 mins earlier)

A colleague of mine did an almost identical connection just last week without any problems and had time to spare. He had 55mins to connect.

What US airport is best to connect from EI transatlantic to UA domestic? I seem to recall having to pass through security in Dulles I think, whereas other times no need for it?

Yes, will be a single ticket issued by Aer Lingus, so I won't be stuck forking out for another flight but, I would have to wait 24 hours for the next one if I missed it.

Dulles isn't my destination, it would be a connection on the return leg. Flying to the Midwest.

My United point was they also fly from Dulles so fly to Dulles from Midwest and take their service to Dublin. It doesn't leave until like 22.00.

Also if you did miss the EI connection UA should transfer you to their flight if space as EI are partners with them.

I think you will be fine with EI connection.

Not necessarily, they might reroute you to your destination with another stop in between.

Thanks all. Turns out I had to change the dates before booking and now have a 2 hour+ connection at ORD both ways. Worked out the same price so I went for the added buffer. Also, I prefer the 2-4-2 layout in the A330 to the 757's 3+3.
