I have an 8 year old 5 series which I imported from Northern Ireland about 5 years ago. I am thinking of changing it and maybe trading it in back in the north. Has anyone any advice about reclaiming VRT paid on import.

In short you'll need to go to NCT centre for VRT export examination. It costs €38. They will give you a refund amount there. From then you have 30 days to remove vehicle from the state.
Once it's exported, it needs to be registered abroad.

In the end you'll need to send to revenue VRT export examination cert, proof that vehicle was removed out of state within 30 days, and proof that it was registered abroad (i.e. copy of registration cert from abroad with you car's VIN number).
If registration date abroad is within 30 days of VRT export examination, then you don't need proof of removal from the state.

And in case it's exported outside EU, you don't need proof of registration abroad - but I don't believe that is relevant to you.

All info is on NCT website and Revenue website.

When trading the car in abroad, it might be difficult to obtain a copy of new registration cert from garage/buyer, unless you agree about it with them.

If a dealer up North is taking it as a trade-in there is a very good chance they will just sell it on to a dealer in the South. Not sure how that would impact your ability to claim a VRT refund.
