powder on stay of new window: normal?

I recently had some windows fitted. Some of the window stays were left with a coating of powder. Is this bad work on the part of the fitters, or is it a normal part of having new windows fitted? Also, will the powder cause the stay to fail sooner than it otherwise would have?

Powder? Is it plaster residue? Takes a few washes to get rid of it. It looks like it's gone but then appears again once the surface dries out.

No, it wasn't plaster; it was too coarse to be plaster. Also, the colour was light brown, whereas I would expect plaster to be white.

I understood that that the powder was the result of drilling that was done to create holes in the masonry, for the screws that fasten the window frame to the masonry.

If it is drilling dust just brush it if there is a lot, then wipe the rest away with a cloth with a bit of oil on it.
