Hi all, just saw a sign up passing some minor roadworks in Ennis that said "Actavo working on behalf of Virgin Media".

Am I right in assuming that sign is a leftover and should really be 'working on behalf of Siro'? Virgin have no cables in Ennis yes??

Actually Virgin own the old Cablelink cable network in Ennis. They keep writing to me offering me 360Mb broadband in my house but I am sticking with eFibre for now until I see if Siro or Eir bring in 1Gb FTTH in my area.

You can input your address on their website here and it will tell you if cable is available in your area.

Wow, never knew they had any presence here and I've lived here for 18 years!

Not that I'd touch them with a bargepole. I see their support cases regularly trending :D

But do you not know that it is the complainers is what is trending? The happy campers will rarely complain. V.M's BB if far & away the best that is currently available. You could take VM for a year until Eir/Siro come calling with their lightspeed stuff. You would be getting 3 x the speed you currently get with efibre.

Wasn't the cable network in Ennis very small?

Yea, not available in my area of Ennis. I checked a few addresses out and nothing.

Pretty sure the old cables were in Marian avenue back in the day.

People say this all the time but it's just not true. Yes they offer a high raw speed but their peering is awful and the vast majority of users don't need the speeds they advertise. With other ISPs you don't need to worry about VM's rubbish IPv6 implementation (even if you opt out they can put you back on at any time) or potential throttling of services that don't have a peering agreement with them.

Of course, if your alternative is ADSL then that's a different story.

100% agree. I've been watching VM threads for some time and the people who know their stuff have posted some pretty damning indictments of the service. If you run Speedtest, everything looks good. But if you actually try and use real world services you run into all kinds of crap.

I've seen people with 100mbps+ services unable to run Netflix in HD, whereas my VDSL2 60mbps connection is easily able to support two UHD streams.

And their blatant attempts to force people to ring their 'loyalty' service before cancelling verges on illegallity. I'm sorry, but I would 100% never sign with them even if they offered me 1gbps service at cheaper than existing prices.

I'm on 360, I'm getting 360 24 hours a day 7 days a week, I've a minimum of 7 devices using the service for gaming, Netflix, YouTube, sky boxsets, torrents, you name it we're downloading it morning noon and night at least 800 gigs per month. VM are by far and away the best ISP I've ever had and I've had them all at this stage, no other ISP comes near them for speed, reliability etc.

Any new update on KNs and/or Actavo's whereabouts in Ennis?

We had KN doing a survey before Christmas in our area for Siro.......I had a chat with the lads and they said it would probably be 6 months before rollout began. At the time they said Ennis was going to be rolled out in parallel to Westport, but i dont see any signs of that.

I'm in Ennis and I've gotten VM installed, no problems at all and i'm getting 360 consistently on my wired connections, I'd prefer if the router was a lot more open so I could change the DNS and stuff but I haven't had any problems, another friend of mine had terrible problems where he was only getting ~30mb though and got it taken out again, I've a feeling that's to do with the device he was using rather than the broadband though.

I've noticed KN around and I asked the engineers about it, they are working on behalf of SIRO but they don't know when it'll be live or available, at the moment they are just getting the area ready for it. Personally, I'm happy to have 360 at the moment and wait a year for SIRO, I'd imagine there'll be a few issues when it goes live.

Anyone seen KN around recently.....?.....Looking at the Eir rollout, Rockmount exchange is not on their list, which means no fiber from them until NBP at earliest so have to hope that Siro will step in.......:((
