ok question with new build in mind, if the cavity is insulated correctly (would this be 150mm?)is there any need for insulated plasterboard inside or is it the norm to use insulated plasterboard inside anyway

you shouldnt use insulated plasterboard on a new build (my professional opinion)

its a cop out by builders and it leads to a worse end result

What does your Preliminary BER Report say?
This should highlight the complete section of the wall along with every other element to ensure compliance.

dont have a preliminary BER report and to be honest I wasn't even aware of such a thing, we are still finalizing plans but are nearly settled on design

When you have your design and layout done, then the BER Assesment will be done in order to work out how the dwelling will comply. Its possible that your Architect or Engineer is acting into the role.

    comply with building regs?
what kinda information should one expect from the assessment, insulation requirements , heating requirements?
you will have to excuse my total lack of building knowledge :o

One part of the Building Regulations yes, Part L.

Also have Part A-m to comply with ;)

The Preliminary BER Report in conjunction with your Architect will highlight what insulation and how much, what heating system, what renewables, Air Tightness etc

    hi kceire
sorry to hijack the thread but I have  related question
I am currently working on an extension and renovation project. Realistically the project is almost everything you would do for a new build as the existing house is being gutted.
however my engineer (who will be certifying on completion) is adament that a prelimary ber/deap is not required. Specifically he (and a Ber inspector that I know) are of the opinion that because the work is technically an extension then the requirement to comply with the renewables part of the regulations is not required. Other building requirements such as insulation, airtightness etc need to be complied with but apparently not the renewables section.
what is your opinion on this renewables point.

    Your engineer is correct.
Insulation and air tightness do need to be complied with as such, you have to insulate as best you can and comply with elemental u values for a wall, roof etc but while house is not a requirement.

He is probably going as much insulation as possible and trying to achieve a good level of air tightness but they are not required as a new house would be.

While it's not mandatory, it would be good to do a pre and post BER to see the improvements.
