Sponsor Age for Baptism

Yesterday when searching through the St Audeon's Baptism records in the Dublin Diocesan Centre for an 'Elizabeth Meroe' (probably born about 1862/3/4, I came across her name as a Sponsor (Godmother, I assume) to her niece in 1874.

Was there any set age for when a person could have 'stood for' a baby at a Baptism? Elizabeth would have been 12 or 13 at best. Unusual? Or would this have been the norm?

In the Catholic church, to be a sponsor at baptism you are supposed to be confirmed yourself. It's entirely possible that Elizabeth would have been confirmed by the age of 12 or 13.

    Peregrinus,
Thanks for the reply. As Elizabeth married in 1882 & her age was 'Minor' the time frame is narrowing for her being born, 1861/62/63. Back to trawling the Church Records. No sign in either St Audeon's, St Nicholas'.
