Reception of BBC overspill on Saorview boxes and TVs.

Over the past week and throughout last January there was a problem with the reception of the overspill of the BBC SD channels on my Saorview integrated TV and also the Saorview box that I use for the other TV. However, BBC 1 and 2 in HD, UTV NI, Channels 4 and 5 and the Irish channels are fine.

I know that there was bad weather back in January but what could be causing disruption to reception of the overspill BBC SD channels on Saorview equipment in Co Cavan (The transmitter I get the overspill from is Brougher Mountain).

Depending on where you are in Cavan you might be able to get a signal from Divis near Belfast. They use 100,000 watts power compared to 20,000 from Brougher. If you google "Divis interfering Brougher" you will find some discussion, including on the Brougher link below. Might be nothing to do with you losing reception but try the channels numbers from Divis to see if you are getting any signal.

Can only guess at what the problem is but I can say it isn't interference from another transmitter.

There are yellow areas in Cavan on the Divis map. Much larger areas in the North. Does anyone know how the interference would manifest itself in these areas?

The symbol shows the location of the Divis (Northern Ireland) transmitter which serves 440,000 homes. The bright green areas shown where the signal from this transmitter is strong, dark green areas are poorer signals. Those parts shown in yellow may have interference on the same frequency from other masts.

Ah right, you reckon the OP is receiving from Divis, not Brougher?

Some parts of Cavan going by the two maps get strong signals from both Brougher and Divis. I just asked the OP to check if they could get anything from Divis. Having 100,000 power compared to 20,000 and serving 440,000 homes compared to 36,000 might make that possible.

Last year you advised someone in Cavan that interference between the two transmitters could be a factor. Why do you rule it out in this case?

And like I asked before, does anyone know how the interference would manifest itself?

Brougher BBC A mux is on channel 28. There's very little else using that on the entire island of Ireland, the nearest to Co. Cavan being Gortnalee, a 30 watt relay in the far west of Fermanagh.

The interference would manifest itself like any other interference to the digital signal, with picture & sound glitching, & 'no signal' messages when it fails completely.

Again, reception of overspill of the BBC SD channels on my Saorview box in the other room was gone last night. Reception of BBC 1 and 2 in HD on the integrated digital TV in the main room was fine.

You probably shouldn't focus so much on it being a problem with a single mux only, it's possible your aerial setup isn't is good as it could be, & this mux is just coming off worse than the others for some reason.

Have you conducted any inspection of the aerial & its cables etc., even a basic visual once-over?

Windmills may be causing interference in my opinion.
