That's sad news. Always thought he was a pure gent with a great pair of hands. It's hard to believe that the man/boy who rode Shergar was still only 55 years of age in 2016.

Really sad to hear the news. He was one of my favourite jockeys as a kid (along with Carson and Cauthen) and absolutely loved watching him in the saddle. RIP.

Very sad news. He was one of the greats. He struggled with his weight in the late 1990s.

I backed Lavery at 16/1 at Leopardstown in 1998 in what was Walter's last Group win afaik. I had my car insurance increased by £1k that week after a crash three years earlier and the win was a great help.

Walter Swinburn was a big race rider, very cool under pressure.

...Not to mention superb jockeyship to coax the inexperienced, once-raced Lammtarra round the turns & cambers of Epsom to win the 1995 Derby. RIP.

Surprised myself at how upset I've been since hearing this news.

Racing obviously takes a toll on people physically and psychologically. I used to really enjoy him on C4, his quiet, informative style in direct contrast to the showbiz of that oaf McCririck.

    Tragic ending for the Choirboy

His training career was a bit of a mystery to me, I can't remember much about it.

It's quite a tribute to Walter Swinburn the man that as a trainer he took Stotsfield through a career where he steadily climbed up the ratings year on year until he peaked at an OR of 117 on his very last run at the age of seven. A rare training performance.

Give my ignorance, but did Leopardstown once have a straight sprint race (without a bend)? Was that a race over at the far side of the track (from the stand)? Just the layout looks different (obviously :D) and they are going the direction one would go on a right hand course, or is their some straight for sprints that they normally no longer use?

The M50 was the reason they lost the sprint course (badly missed).

I think at this stage you can assume that unfortunately he may well either directly or indirectly have played some part in it.

Anybody any idea the cause of death?

Drank himself to death basically, just like Eddery

Haunting and beautiful obituary in the Field today -

"It says everything about Swinburn's natural ability that Michael Stoute took him on as stable jockey and entrusted him with the ride on Shergar. The young man had everything, style, perfect balance and a steely determination in the most important races. Walter was quiet and respectful but in his own mind he was taking on the best on equal terms.......................... More recently, he appeared to withdraw into a world of his own, beyond help. Walter Swinburn's star shone brightly and all too briefly"

There was definitely something different and in my opinion heroic about WR Swinburn. It wasnt his hands or race riding ability - all of the top jocks are absolute masters of their craft. More to do with the hard professional hidden behind the softly spoken choirboy mask?

Interesting quote about that win from guardian interview (ref to year 2000 is a mistake)

In March 2000 Swinburn won the Phoenix Stakes at Leopardstown. "Riding a Group One winner had, once, been my ultimate. I would be flying for days. But I felt nothing in Leopardstown. That morning I'd forced myself into the sweatsuit, gone running and ended up in the sauna. I didn't feel like a winner."
