Sky Q - adding another LNB

Nightmare of an install and just looking for some advice to rectify the situation.

I've just had sky Q installed with the multiroom option. I'm currently on virgin media, but also opted for Sky fibre which isn't active for another couple of days.

Up till now, I've been freeview & had a dish with an octo LNB feeding my Humax PVR & another couple of boxes around the house - I wanted to retain this solution on top of the Sky box. The Sky guy came, changed the dish to a standard Sky q dish (2 feeds) and left my leads hanging. He said to my wife that he would be back with an 'attachment' that would allow me to connect my other devices to the box....surprise surprise, no sign of him.

In the process, he stood on my previously good dish and bent it in half and left the remains down the sideway with my Octo LNB on the floor !. He couldn't get the multiroom working and told my wife that there was an issue with Virgin Media and it wouldn't work until the Sky fibre became active. I'm less than happy......

My question here is, what is the 'attachment' to allow me to connect my existing devices ? is it a bracket to get my LNB on the arm or will it extend the Sky Q LNB ?

I'm just desperate to get my old system working again

Now that is not good, you should report him. That sky q is a pain. Sky know full well that people have freesat and that they want to retain it. That installer knew exactly why you had the octo lnb. I dont know if you had all feeds used but ... Sky have a hybrid lnb with 6 outputs BUT you have to ask for it specifically. The attachment would be the hybrid lnb and installer usually have them spare. The existing dish could have been used.

I know nothing about virgin media.

here is a hybrid lnb on ebay

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2060778.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xsky+hybrid+lnb.TRS0&_nkw=sky+hybrid+lnb&_sacat=0

You should complain to sky and even threaten to cancel that sky q and then get a hybrid fixed for free and credit. etc and a dish.

Considering you had an octo LNB would the 4 spare outputs on the SkyQ hybrid LNB suffice or will you require a multiswitch in addition to feed more than 4 tuners?

Also I'd suggest you raise the issue with them over on the Talk to Sky forum - http://www.boards.ie/ttforum/1598

That is deliberate and malicious damage to private property.

Because Sky Q is not working I would insist they take it out and return the set up to the way it was prior to their interference.

That is a disgraceful way to behave.

The 4 spare will certainly get me over Christmas as I need two for my Humax PVR & two more to feed standard freeview (non recording) boxes elsewhere.

I've raised it with SKY & don't mean to have a gripe here, was more trying to find a solution to get my freeview back, but very shoddy.

    thanks for the info

By the sounds of it the best solution for you would have been a second dish and new wiring for sky q leaving your original setup untouched. As a new subscriber they would have been booked for a full install anyway. The installer saw the dish and wires so went for the handiest for himself, put the sky dish on your mount, used 2 of the existing cables, fobbed you off with empty promise to fix your FTV setup and disappeared.

I'd be insisting the original setup is replaced as was unless you can live with the sky q and 4 standard feeds which is the max you will get from one dish without a multiswitch.

What does a SkyQ dish look like and why won't existing dishes do ?

    I assume it's a standard Mk.4 Sky dish.

Ok thanks, when the guy said the installer changed his dish to a standard SkyQ dish, I thought that there was some kind of new SkyQ dish as well as the SkyQ LNB.

The SkyQ lnb provides a completely different electrical signal to the Sky Q receiver to that of the electrical signal supplied to older HD/SD boxes. As such if you connected your old Sky HD box to the new Sky Q lnb it would not work. My brother has had exactly the same problem. You have two options. You ring Sky and tell them that the installer disconnected your FTA setup and simply installed Sky Q (as they are paid to do). For both your Sky Q and Humax to work you need to install a hybrid lnb that supports both Sky Q electrical signal and also has outputs for older HD/SD receivers. Alternatively you put up a second dish with the old lnb connected and connect the old cables to that dish. Your choice, but those are your only choices

and should you wish to understand why the electrical signal has changed, the whole purpose of sky Q is to support the next generation TV systems. To support 4K/8K TVs requires the electrical signal to change to a wideband solution. And thats it in a nutshell

4k will happily work with the old LNB technology, the wideband LNB solution with 2 feeds allows for multiple tuners to be incorporated in the receivers.

So does that mean even if they fit the extra four connectors I can't use it with my existing kit if the signal is different?

No, the hybrid LNB is legacy by default on all 6 outputs according to various discussions on the internet, when a SkyQ receiver is connected to the hybrid LNB 2 of the outputs output a wideband signal required for the SkyQ receiver.

    http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Q/Sky-q-and-SKy-HD-boxes-in-same-house/td-p/2419122

which is just to prove my point.

you can buy a hybrid lnb on ebay

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sky-Q-Hybrid-Lnb-/152326936246

or install a separate dish with your old lnb connected to your old hd/sd boxes

thanks, good to know. was aware of the many, many internal tuners within the Sky Q box so while my solution is right my description is wrong. Had guessed proper UHD required wideband LNB but in fact the wideband is to support all the internal tuners. you live and learn

Just to follow up on this... I called Sky and explained that my FTA box no longer works. They said no problem and booked an engineer in to come back out & fit the hybrid LNB for no charge. Can't ask any better than that!

In the process, he stood on my previously good dish and bent it in half and left the remains down the sideway with my Octo LNB on the floor !.

I wonder if Sky will accept responsibility for this also?
    Malicious damage claim?

    Ok sorry, one last question.

I've now told sky that they can take their equipment back, Fibre install has been delayed AGAIN and I've still no multiroom.

They owe me a dish as they broke my previous one, but can I just check the new dish SKY install is standard ? i.e I could mount my octo LNB onto that one and get all of my freeview back ?

Whoever comes out to take the Sky equipment away should be the one to fit the replacement standard dish with LNB fitted and wired up as it was before they interfered with it.

In other words they should put everything back in working condition and not just drop some parts which might be correct.

Get it in writing (email will do) from Sky.

If considering Sky in future do not let them touch the standard dish ..... have them supply and fit their own dish in addition to your existing set up.

The Sky Mk.4 won't take your octo (different neck diameter).

    Compatible octo - http://www.freetv.ie/octo-lnb/
