    Hi,

I have a Volvo S40 1.8 Petrol 2005 with 155km. I was offered 500 on a trade in but this seems exceptionally low. I am unsure of what to accept or to even be looking for. Again I'd sell it privately but Im not sure of what price to ask, I see the same model on donedeal at everything from 1.5k to 2.5k.

What value of car were you trading it in against and how well was the price of the newer car compared to others? The trade-in figure you got is relevant to the value of the newer car so focus more on the cost to trade-up price than what they allow you for your old car. Otherwise another dealer with the same car could allow you €1500 for your old car and just add €1000 more to the price of the newer car meaning your still paying the same amount.

In reality a 12 year old 1.8 litre petrol car is not going to be worth a whole lot to a dealer especially a main dealer who will just sell it onto the trade. If you think you can get more for it privately then do that as you would probably get the same €500 knocked off the price of the newer car for buying without a trade-in.

I agree with above, you are basically 'giving' your car to the dealer. What ever they get for it is a bonus to them when they go to sell it!

A 12 year old 1.8 petrol car with high road tax is saleproof ....with insurance companies avoiding cars over 10 years old , there is very little market for this car ... save the time and hassle of trying to sell it privately for what its worth . What car are you looking to upgrade to ?? There are great scrappage deals against news if your budget stretches that far.

Yes the new car will only lose 5 times that in depreciation sitting on the driveway in year 1, chappppppeeeee €200 a year tax is the way ahead for sure.

OP if your Volvo is well kept and has a bit of NCT 1500 is very realistic. It's true that it's not the most desirable car but I sold two similar cars on DoneDeal this year fairly easily as myself and my wife both traded up. Nobody would touch what we had to trade in. I got them NCT'd and valeted and they were gone very quickly.

That dealer is trying to tell you nicely that he doesn't want your car.

High tax. High tax is the e2350 on highest band of emissions on current system or the e1200 rate or anything above 2.5 on old system that's high motor tax!
