worth waiting for Kaby Lake?

I have been humming and hawing and delaying a new pc build, mainly because my teenagers are so bloody expensive.

On black friday I bought a case and SSD, I have a GTX 970 installed in current PC that i will transfer, and I have a list of other components in mind and have the funds now to pull the trigger. Since i have delayed so long I am now wondering if i should wait for the new year when new Kaby Lake processors come out. Will be my first self build so I am looking forward to it. Now that the first components have been delivered and with Xmas holidays coming up I am tempted to just go ahead and get started. I was planning on an i5 6600k.

I am just wondering is it likely that i would regret not waiting until the new processors come out (apparently they have already started shipping). Should I wait until January - bearing in mind that I will probably expect to have the new build for hopefully 5+ years before upgrading again. I want a PC that is capable of running VR, though as matters stand I wonder if the current price of headsets is worthwhile considering the relatively limited software available for them.

Is there any real information on whether they are going to be a significant step up (or step down in price)?

    Clock-for-clock there are negligible improvements.

It's a tiny bump with improved stock speed.

Get the 6600k (or better yet, a DDR3+Xeon 1231v3 setup).

I had only really been looking at 1151 chips.

I guess motherboard would be cheaper and Ram too. Is this chip actually faster than 6600k?

thanks, will look at this now before I pull the trigger.

    I had picked out:

    Asus z170-A MB, 2*8gb DDR4, i5 6600k

i7 6700 would be better than the 6600k imo, and definitely better than a Xeon

If you want to gain the benefits of 1151 and DDR4, I'd also agree with the i7-6700 non-K, though yes, the Xeon would be faster than the 6600K in CPU heavy games, but at this stage buying new I'd lean towards DDR4 and Skylake.

To be honest the cost of a Z170A with 6600K wouldn't be too apart from a H110M or H170M with i7-6700 and it's superior, even if the 6600K is overclocked, and it has better longevity prospects to boot.

You don't really have any real incentive to hold off based on raw performance, but possibly on price grounds depending on what AMD brings to the table with Zen which may drive prices down.

    thanks.

I am going to go with this h170 motherboard instead having looked at your post:

    Cheaper and better outputs too.

I think I will actually go for i5 6600 (not K) since i don't intend to overclock anyway. Extra €100 or so for an i7 6700 - probably not worth it for me really. Computer will be used to play games and hopefully VR down the line but I guess this i5 will be sufficient for my needs. I kind of like the idea of not overclocking and using stock fan too, especially since this is my first time building.

    Thanks for help all.

I think it is too late to buy windows 8 and upgrade for free - right?

Amazon should be OK too; check that you're buying from a reputable source, otherwise you're giving money to pirates.
If you're going to pirate, don't pay the pirates.

You can also install Windows 10 & skip activation; all it does is put a watermark in the bottom-right corner.
