    Hi,

I just wanted to get your view on the quality of public services offered by the outpatients departments. In past few years, each time I visited the OP department, I noticed that the patients cannot see the specialist directly and are instead examined by a different junior doctor from another department. the consultation process is always very fast, and the doctors are not very reluctant to get a complete history and it seems as they want the patient out of the door as quickly as possible. In certain cases I have also noticed that certain tests and investigations that were discussed during the consultation were never ordered.

Is this a common thing in all public hospitals?

A lot depends on who your lead clinician is. Some of the consultants get their SHO or Registrar to do the opd clinics. Last time I had an OP appointment I saw the registrar and consultant. That was Beaumont neurology but different hospitals, xifferent systems etc. I have an OP appointment on Wednesday and I'll see the registrar, the consultant and the MS nurse.
