I had my Skoda Superb serviced yesterday with a main dealer. I had been having a problem with the car not starting some times and he rang to say that the cam shaft sensor needed to be replaced. said it was €293. I said go ahead. he then rang back to say he hadn't the part in and would order it for me. I am just after checking out the part on micks garage and it costs just under €40. now I appreciate that it has to be fitted but am I missing something here? I am going to ring him back on Monday morning but before I do this is it a very hard part to install?

Yes you are. The part on Micksgarage is not a genuine Skoda part. It is most likely a cheap copy of the Skoda part.

What year is your car and which engine is in it?

I got a genuine cam shafts sensor from audi 3 years ago for 40 quid. Was for a petrol engine.

Just got this done on her self's micra at local garage that looks after both our cars. He did a full service, front brakes, fixed an issue with wiper assembly, and did the cam shaft position sensor for around €300
I say around as he did front ball joints on my car as well as a vehicle speed sensor on my accord and was 500 total. He reckoned micra was about 300.

Different smaller car but similar job I suppose.

    its a 2012 1.6 diesel

Did you give them the go ahead to order and fit the sensor? a little unfair if you did, if you wanted to go researching you should have done this before you gave the 'go ahead'.....

The price sounds mad to me but perhaps there is something about that engine that results in such a price.
George Dalton should be able to confirm if it's in the right ballpark.

nearly sure i had a diesel one in and got one from motor factors, car started first time with original old device but logged fault codes.the replacement one took much longer for car to start about 6 revolutions before coming to life, ended up ordering from dealer in the end.

dont think common joe soap can do the job as needing diagnostics done after these parts are fitted.

Ok, thanks for the replies. Just to be clear i am not suggesting for one second that i fit it myself. I am just looking to see if there is any reason why there is such a difference between the prices.

it all depends on what parts you need as sometimes main dealer prices can be cheaper than motor factors.
we had a saab in logging issue with coil and main dealer price was over e400+ plugs.not even checked motor factors as car was an odd model and wanted 100% correct parts fitted.
motor factor prices can vary if 10 makers of parts can supply them with prices for same item but how long will they last?
