Anybody know anything about it? Cycling by the airport and saw the emergency equipment out. An Air Canada 777 landed about 20 minutes ago. It's parked up on the ramp now with emergency vehicles around it.

Medical and emergency services because it was likely overweight.

It was heading from Munich, but turned back just west of Sligo. Didn't head to SNN, which may have been closer. May be tech.

Didn't seem to get any priority approach into DUB based on FR24.

Might have been too high for SNN or wanted to burn more fuel by going to DUB

For major medical emergencies I would say DUB is generally preferred.

Most likely is that it will be easier to get a replacement crew into Dublin, as the original crew will almost certainly be out of hours before they get to the destination. Also probably easier to get overnight accommodation for the passengers in the Dublin area, if the issue is technical and needs a night stop.

Distance wise, there wasn't a lot in it between Dublin and Shannon, and at the time it came in, there wasn't a lot of other Dublin traffic to conflict with it. There was a significant presence of emergency vehicles along the runway, which then followed it on to stand, though that may have been to ensure that they were able to respond very quickly if the brakes overheated, but it looks like they made the rapid exit turnoff, if it had been that heavy, they'd have gone to the end of the runway.

Hopefully, Aviation Herald will be able to get more information, as of now, there's nothing been posted.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Spent less than an hour on the ground at DUB. https://www.flightradar24.com/ACA847/bd5dc57

In that case, as it's also not appeared on AV Herald, I am going to put it down as most likely a medical emergency, which they don't report, and that also explains the choice of Dublin over Shannon, hospital facilities are a lot closer to the airport.

And are national rather than regional centres of care.

It's long passed divert to the nearest suitable airfield or indeed divert to Shannon as its one of the Atlantic diversion airfields, this is only done now when it is an absolute must and time is critical (Fire etc or sick pax will die otherwise).

This was a medical and the pilots will have been in contact with both ops and their medical suppliers via sat comms who would have been given all relevant and available data to make the best choice. As it was a medical situation they would have differed to the doctor who has a massive database of hospitals and facilities and possibly will even had made phone contact with the hospital and checked to make sure everything was available for a patient including bed and doctor on shift with specialist knowledge.

One of the considerations is also handling agent and airport that deals with the airline regularly, indeed that is why Dublin has gotten a lot of Air Canada/Lufthansa/Delta/United diversions. It also helps that Dublin has several flights a day from all which can facilitate new crew and rebooking of pax. It is also the reason that at times diversions miss Ireland completely and go to Heathrow etc because there is an aircraft or seats available.

As far as I am aware there has been a Norovirus outbreak in University Hospital Limerick. This may have had a bearing on the decision to go to Dublin. May have the same issue in any of the Dublin hospitals, I don't know?
