Very good program, especially the way they covered the pirates in the 70s and 80s. Part 2 (of 2) at the same time (9 p.m.) next Thursday Dec. 15th.

Although 'Radio Athlone' was renamed 'Radio Eireann' in 1937, a lot of wireless manufacturers were still putting 'Athlone' on their dials well into the 1950s.

Parts of it annoyed me to be honest. I felt they really should have played a few more clips rather than the saturation of talking heads. I also felt that they sort of glossed over a few things that had the potential to be very interesting. Like, at one point Marion Finucane was talking about how her boss would have huge fights with his bosses. They sort of just dropped that. I think there was room there for some good stories.

Overall it was really interesting, but a bit shallow IMO (which is to be expected I guess in a 2 hour documentary spanning 100 years).

I'm slightly concerned about part 2 though, the little piece at the end said they were going to "Show how RTE fended off the challenge to their supremacy."... Wonder are they just going to totally ignore 2FM's demise...

I guess its going to be about the rise of the super pirates in the 80s.
2FMs " demise" will come later.
