Are you allowed on DA? I want to volunteer with the SVP just to get out of the house a bit but not sure what the rules surrounding this are if any.

You're allowed to take holidays and do what you want. Would that give you enough time?

I don't want to take a holiday. I'm sure some people on social welfare allowances can afford holidays but I cannot. If you're being smart I'd ask you not be thanks. :)

    You're picking me up wrong.

People on Social welfare are supposed to be looking for employment. Hence they get Job seekers allowance.

You are allowed to take holidays from your "job" of looking for work. I assume it's 20 days statutory, same as workers - you do need to notify SW of the holidays you wish to take.

It's during these days that you could volunteer.

    Your apology is accepted :p

The op is on his disability allowance there exempt from Jobseekers terms of actively seeking work ,

Op you can volunteer but you need to check with your local office they only allow volunteering to certain types of groups ,
But there shouldn't be an issue

    Hi

I actually volunteer with SVP, so if you need any more information please PM me. It's very rewarding work. I'm afraid I'm no help in answering your DA question, sorry.

You can work on DA as long as its rehabilitative so I'm sure it's the same with volunteering. If your doctor would be willing to write a letter saying he/she feels it is beneficial for you I wouldn't see there being any problems.

    Hope that helps.

    Disability payments

Usually, you get a disability payment because you cannot work. If you are getting Disability Allowance, Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension you must get permission to work as a volunteer. You must apply to the section that pays your social welfare payment before starting any voluntary work.

You can work as a volunteer while you are getting Invalidity Pension or Illness Benefit and it is not necessary to apply for the Partial Capacity Scheme.

If you are getting Invalidity Pension you cannot do more than 19.5 hours of voluntary work per week. If you are getting Illness Benefit or Disability Allowance, there is no limit on the number of hours per week you can work unpaid as a volunteer.
