Getting a new inset stove installed Today to replace the gas fire. I made sure that I got a new hearth with expansion joints, but I did not think for a moment that my surround was not made of stone.. I paid for stone, and even got a big spiel about how to take care of it because it was porous and blah blah. The installers landed Today and tell me it's plastic or some other material that will melt.. Here's a picture of the rear single piece fire surround. any ideas what its made from? By any chance is it at least some form of heat resistant plaster. I hate the thought of paying out even more money.

Does it sound/feel like stone when you knock it? It could be a composite stone product like Quartz although looking at the bubbles on the bank maybe not. You could be right about plaster.

Ask the supplier what it's made of. If it's not what you paid for, insist they replace it.

Some parts do.. the base for example seems solid when I knock on it, but other bits actually sound much more hollow.... And.... it flexes... :(
Unfortunately the supplier is long gone. the fireplace went in as part of an allowance when the house was originally built. We went into the shop, picked it and it was installed when we got the keys

Talk to the builder, I would guess your contract was with them not the shop.

I"m trying to imagine what sort of fire surround would flex. Plaster would just crack, stone wouldn't move.
