Advice on being "side shifted"

    Hi all

I am just looking for a bit of advice - maybe I am over-reacting but I just want a sense check.

I have been working in my current position for the last 4 years, getting on great, employers very happy with me etc etc. So no problems at all on that front.

About 10 months ago, one of the more senior members of the management team (who works in a completely different department to me), went on maternity leave, and I was asked to take over her role (or certainly the large portion of her role) when she is on maternity leave.

My boss told me that they were going to recruit someone to fill my original role (i.e. the role I was hired to do) for a 6 month period. This was over the summer months. That never materialised as they were unable to get someone suitable for such a short contract. I therefore was in essence "double jobbing" it for the last number of months, and everything went as it should and no balls were dropped.

Roll on to November, and I was informed that a new person has been hired ON A FULL TIME PERMANENT contract to effectively "take over" my original role (or certainly a large part of it).

I am expected to meet with him this week to effectively brief him on my original role.

So right now, I feel like I am becoming the "spare wheel" - I really don't know where I stand, and I have had no communication from anyone to tell me where I am going when the girl returns from maternity leave.

I was assured in the initial meetings about this change-over that my original job was safe, but right now I feel like I am straddling two roles whilst someone has come in and taken my old job!!!!

What should I do? I am a bit worried - I know they can't let me go, but its a bit difficult....

Sorry, very long winded, I apologise.

You need to make your concerns know to your line manager/appropriate senior person and ask them to clarify your role within the company "moving forward". Also a worthwhile time to get feedback on how you handled the more senior position and how that shapes your future within the company.

Go talk to someone in the know.

Is there a chance that the more senior person is not coming back from maternity leave and you will be taking that role on a permanent basis? If so is that a good move for you?

well then talk to someone in the company about their plans for you. Maybe there is another more senior role that they intend to offer you since you have successfully handled a more senior role. Or maybe you are right to feel unsettled but I doubt they would want rid of you after you successfully held down a more senior role.
