Quick question - am I mad considering putting animals on 5 acres to manage the grass? Renting it out is not an option - realise I won't make a profit but what else can I do to manage the grass? I'm considering sheep? Or should I stick to donkeys and have absolutely no income from it?!

If you like sheep go for it if you don't your only drawing work and hassle on yourself.

Thanks - I don't dislike sheep...or any animal for that matter! I dislike 5 hours of topping fields though to keep them looking respectable...and only had it re-seeded at the end of this summer so I'm thinking next summer will be fairly bad as in it'll need to be done weekly...hence I'm looking at grazing some animals and sure it's a bit of a hobby to get outside in! Not expecting much / anything from it....my biggest dilemma is what to put on it...cattle are out as it's so small and no winter housing or equipment etc...I'm about to get fencing done so want to be sure what's going in there and applying for flock number etc if going that route...thanks

Don't write off cattle just yet.
A simple crush and a simple fence is all you need, probably alot cheaper than sheep fencing 5 acres.
Neighbour of mine has about 15 acres. He buys 4 cull cows in April/early may. He takes hay off c.4acres of it in summer. The cows keep on top of the grass.
Cull cows can be very low maintenance, docile animals once you buy them right. Mastitis is about the only issue or that they might turn out to be in calf. Ideal for your situation as they'd have high grass intake from the day you'd buy them (which would be nearing peak grass growth). 2 would probably do you. Factory end of October or whenever grass is getting scarce. Would almost always leave you a few bob profit
