    Hi guys,
Appointment booked with optilase for friday week to get the bulbs zapped. I'm getting the PRK surgery and Eamonn Hynes is doing it. Reading his profile on the page, he seems to specialise in the prk, I'm quite nervous. (am looking forward to that vallium!), has anyone had this procedure done by Mr Hynes recently?

Hi, I had PRK done in Optilase in Cork back in March. I won't lie, you are going to be in some discomfort for about 4-5 days afterwards (it is longer recovery than the standard procedure), so have some music/eBooks/Podcasts downloaded to pass the time - you will need to lock yourself away in a dark room! Just keep putting your drops in your eyes, and you will be fine by about Tuesday

If you haven't already got your €100 referral discount, PM me and i'll happily give you mine.

Just got a LASIK procedure on Thursday with Eamon Hynes, and really couldn't recommend him highly enough.

He's very good isn't he! Very chilled.. really put me at ease! had a great experience up there! 4 weeks since surgery, had my first eye test today, just below 20:20.. like I could read 4 out of the 8 letters on the 20:20 line. Have a slight haze but that should settle in the coming weeks! So happy right now, I was -4.5 and -5.5 and couldn't see 8inches or so in front of my face.. basically I had the same vision as a newborn! Now I have close to 20:20 for first time in 23 years :-)

Ive had it done twice by him. Once 10 years ago and again a few months ago. It's really not that big of a deal. I'd much rather have PRK than go to the dentist.

The surgery is easy. Two days after will be a rough day though.

Best of luck Mcgiggles ! Surgery is the easy part, its the afterwards that's uncomfortable (but in my experience with LASIK not painful)
The staff really put you at ease in there and hopefully you'll be as happy as I am with the results now 4-ish months on

Have it done a month now! Couldn't recommend it enough! :) the staff were so lovely! Had one lovely nurse that nattered away to me the whole surgery (the whole 2 minutes lol) and distracted me :)

What kind of price did you guys pay? Got quoted more than €4k for lasik which is higher than I was expecting...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,224 ✭✭✭mcgiggles

3500 is the original price for PRK, I got Laya discount of 15% and I'm a Therapie customer (sister company) and got a 10% discount from that so paid 2690.. there's always "500 off" deals and that, they should come down from that price.. do you have health insurance? LASIK is a bit pricier I think cos they use 2 machines?

    Hi,

Been recommended the PRK, from what I've been told and read above, I see day 1/2 are the tough days, how did people find the days after that? Trying to see if it will be okay to return to computer based Job on the day 5/6.

Also is it fair to say, you would need family support throughout or is it manageable on your own?

    Cheers

Day 2 was tough for me and i spent it in the bed but at that i would have been okay to get up for food etc.. i was able to be up and about all the rest of the days, so you would be grand on your own I would say!
Day 3 i found light sensitive and days 4-5 my eyes just felt dry and i wanted the lenses out! Day 5 you will have to get the lens out so after that is better..
tbh i was off for just over 2 weeks (i had it dec16th and wasnt back to work till Jan) to a desk based job and i found it very tiring on the eyes then... i found it very tiring for at least the first 2 weeks anyways, loads of drops and turn the brightness on your screen way down! Just being honest :-) do you wear contacts or glasses right now?

Thanks for that info, very helpful. I wear contacts usually, both in work and outside. Sounds like it might be a good idea to take an extra few days after day 5 appointment so.

No worries :-) better off knowing! Your eyes will adjust quicker having worn contacts before.. i was the same, I wore them 80% of the time.. the optician said its cos our eyes are used to having to lubricate themselves so they dont get *as* dry. Still use your drops and dont be afraid to ask for more. I got another bottle off the optician at my check up. A girl i worked with had never worn contacts and her eyes were much dryer than mine after..

I'm getting PRK in Cork on Friday.
I live 5 minutes walk away from Optilase, and they said I should be fine to walk there myself the following morning for the checkup as long as I have sunglasses, is this true? I'm worried I might need a white cane or walk into traffic!

I've got a load of Audiobooks and podcasts bookmarked (I've never used apps for them), but will it be too painful to actually log into my laptop to open them?

No the next day should be grand to walk in, (like your vision wont be 20:20 yet but painwise you should be fine) Next day for me there was no pain at all..

The only day that I found painful was the 2nd day after the surgery.. they say generally its 2 days after with PRK as thats when the cells are actually growing over your cornea. And at that it wasnt painful as such either, my eyes were just stingy like I was chopping onions, and runny (all day so my sinuses acted up) but the numbing drops they give you help that tonnes! That was the only day i used those! I listened to audiobooks throughout my 5 days and even on the 2nd day i could still use the phone. The day after surgery was grand, day 3 I was a bit light sensitive and days 4 and 5 were grand just dry and dying to get the lenses out then! Couldnt really watch tv but phone was grand to use for audiobooks and i got a colouring book to pass the time aswell.. very relaxing :-)
