A Qatar Airways Boeing 777-300, registration A7-BAN performing flight QR-708 (Dec 3rd) from Washington Dulles,DC (USA) to Doha (Qatar) with 350 people on board, was enroute at FL310 over the Atlantic Ocean about 115nm northeast of Lajes Terceira Island (Portugal) when the crew initiated a diversion to Lajes reporting a number of injuries on board after experiencing turbulence. The aircraft entered a hold at 6000 feet to dump fuel and landed safely on Lajes' runway 15 about 35 minutes after setting course towards Lajes. One passenger received a serious injury (fractured leg) in the upset, 2 minor injuries, another passenger complained about heart ache causing concerns of a possible heart attack which turned out not true however.
This should be a reminder to always keep your seatbelt fastened!

I presume the recent high pressure over northern Europe has pushed the jet streams north or south of their usual positions.

Was on a flight up from Dubai last Friday morning which was very uncomfortable for a few hours. Particularly between mid Iran and Turkey. An announcement from the cockpit was hard to hear fully but I did hear mention of strong jet stream and severe turbulence. There were also a lot of thunderstorms in area. We appeared to be in cloud for a lot of the time.

I think there could well have been injuries had the passengers and cabin crew not been belted up.
