Can anyone recommend a company that can retrieve data from a damaged external hard drive? Want the best chance of recovery & not a cowboy so if anyone knows of a reputable company please let me know. I see some have a "no recovery, no fee" policy and others who claim they're not as thorough because of that. And all are best in the business so only one can be telling the truth!

Did you get anywhere with this? I've a problem with a WD My Passport drive. Trying to decide if the cost is worth it for the data I've lost.

Was quoted €399 from a WD recommended specialist (Kroll Ontrack in the UK)

I called a place out in Tallaght (datarescue.ie) and they'll do an initial inspection for about €50. The chap I spoke to said that on average it can cost €600 to €1000 to recover the data.

I'm not sure if the data is worth that much....

Theres a shop called Computers unlimited ,about 30 yards from
eddie rockets ,Phibsboro shopping centre .theres a large sign pc repair ,
Data recovery under the front window .that shop is there about 8 years
    or more . .
I never did business with them. so I think it might be worth asking for an estimate.
IT might be just a loose data or power cable in the case ,or a faulty pcb.
IN an external drive theres a small pcn, with a data and power socket
and 2 cables that plug into the drive.
The drive itself could be fine .
    http://sigg3.net/entry/1185
Theres usually 4-6 small philips screws hidden under plastic nubs ,
open the screws if you wish to open the main external drive case ,
in order to remove the Sata drive .
put screws in a bowl ,so they are not lost.
You could open the case ,plug it into a pc using the data and power cables
    from the dvdrom drive .
    IF its a sata drive.
Switch off pc. take out the main pc power cable from esb power socket.

Plug in drive ,plug in power data cables ,
plug main power cable back into pc.

    turn on ,pc,

Wait 5-7 minutes to see if drive is detected as drive d:/ or e or f:/ in
    menu My computer Drives

    After windows boots up

    in my computer .

As long as you are very careful with handling the drive and do not touch the
pcb underneath the drive And put it on a clean dry flat surface
theres little chance you,ll damage the drive.

First touch a water tap,the metal part ,to get rid of any static electricity .
maybe put some plastic tape underneath the drive to prevent
    any possible short circuits.

I went to computers unlimited/data recovery ireland in phibsboro. between both failed drives they managed to recover all my data but it is pricey. They'll quote first after the initial assessment so you can see if you want to proceed or not then. They were prompt & helpful so definitely worth giving them a call

Excellent first post. Welcome to boards :D

Bit of a stretch to say 'anyone' can recover data from a hdd. Some companies invest in specialised equipment to attempt difficult recovery scenarios. There is in fact a whole industry built around data recovery.

Please state more clearly the message you are trying to get across.

Its like fixing a 5 year old laptop,
is it worth spending money on this,How much will i be willing to spend,.if the platters need to be fixed it, costs hundreds of euros.
ie theres a physical fault with the drive,
its more than some deleted files or damaged boot sectors.
if you put the drive into a sata caddy and use recuva it might get back 95 per cent of your data.
sata caddy cost is 20-35 euro,
Depending on if you buy a usb caddy,or one with its own power supply.
3.5 inch drives need a caddy with a power supply,
500ma from a usb port wont spin up a 3.5inch drive.
If you take out the drive do not touch the pcb circuit board underneath the drive.
Put it on a clean dry flat surface.
