I know you will always get more/have more room to negotiate with a dealer if you sell privately vs trading, but it really just suits me better to trade.

How do you know what you should be looking for when trading? I've had a look on carzone at similar cars/spec/milage but they're all for sale in main dealers. How much do they look to add on the trade price when they advertise?

    Any tips for negotiating?

    151 318d with 28,000km & service pack. I've been offered €26k by a dealer.

BMW recently announced price contributions (BMW speak for price reductions) to their model range. So 4k off a brand new 3 Series afaik. That means resale values of used models had dropped too. This and due to Brexit it's cheaper to import one now, if you want to go up to a similar 171 3 Series don't be surprised if a dealer wants around 12k off you would be my guess.

    Trading against a 4 series. There's a €5k contribution on these.

I know Brexit etc has an impact on 2nd hand value, I just noticed similar cars for sale online for €36k. €10k less as a trade in value seems like a lot.

Are you comparing like with like? BMW dealers will charge more for certain higher spec cars. There is also room in their prices for straight deal discounts, they also offer 2 years warranty which costs money as they replace a lot of stuff like tyres, brake pads/discs, etc. Not saying it still justifies 10k of a difference, have you tried different dealers?

BTW there are BMW dealers asking 36k for a 2016 318d so you cannot expect to get anywhere near that figure as a trade in for a 2 year old model:

Yeah I compared same spec cars ad most were coming in around €35/6. I've only had one dealer value the car so was just wondering is that big a difference standard. They've knocked a decent chunk off the list price so I'm happy enough with deposit/payments but will probably drop into another dealer.

What spec is your 318d and what mileage?
These things are important as to its value to a BMW dealer.
Definitely get more than one dealer to price it however.

It's the sport model, metallic paint, 19" alloys (two brand new run flats due to punctures), usual things like leather, heated steering wheel, sat nav (think it's the business pack), taxed til july 17.

Is it manual or auto? Autos fetch a bit more money than manuals even in the 3 Series. Also contact dealers outside Dublin as multiple dealers of the same brand in one city probably keep tabs on each other's pricing.

Yep it's auto. I do feel like 26k is giving it away. Maybe I would do better with a country dealer?

Definitely get prices outside the pale, even a few hundred euro can be worth the trip down. Servicing and warranty work can still be done by a local dealer. BTW the 4 Series is getting a mid life makeover around March or April and while it won't be too extensive I'd still be mentioning to the dealer. From reading the BMW 330e thread here the BMW contribution is from BMW so dealers still have the same margin they had before to play with.

That 26k offer is really only 24k as it's eating up discount too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,730 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

They looking for something close to 25k to upgrade 2 years. Madness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,679 ✭✭✭carsfan2

You have a nice spec 3
    Is It an Irish car?
They are giving you a low offer in my opinion but maybe this is because of the price drops at the other end.
I would have thought closer to 30kwas more reasonable but Bmw sales guy told me the trade in allowances have/ will drop back this year.

To be honest op, you are between a rock and hard place.

You won't get good trade in value from dealer as no one will shoot themselves in a foot, with brexit going on and all these cuts on prices that's happening now.
You won't be able to sell it privately as no one in the right mind will buy a car for 30K from private hands.

Your best bet is just drive it and that's it. Still try to shop around though, but I doubt dealers want more 1-3 year old stock with all the pcp stuff coming back in less then a month.

This is painful!!! Just offered €23k & dealer trying to knock €5k contribution off the top rather than off the deposit 😑 getting bored now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,730 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Keep your car. Its too new to be trading in. You will get screwed where ever you go.

It sounds like to me like they are trying to recoup that discounted contribution given to PCP/straight deals from the customer with a trade in. They are basically saying buy a brand new car off us but just don't bother trading one in.

They are terrible offers you've got alright.
Have you tried dealers outside Dublin at all?
Your car must have been 45kish new I'm guessing so that is awful depreciation.
Might be better to hold on Until the depreciation curve flattens out a bit.
what is the cost to change they are quoting you?
Maybe they're discounting the 4 series to make the cost the same as if they're giving you more for your own.

    €53,222 cash price
    €5k contribution
    €9k deposit (inc trade equity)

    Monthly payment €710

This was a country-ish dealer who has no build slots so 9 week lead time.

If the dealer has no slots then maybe they are less keen to do a deal than one looking for a customer to fill a slot?
Is that the best deal you got so far?
Why are you looking to get out of the 318d? Surely the 418d will just be more of the same?

No I actually had Dublin dealer at 475pm with 10k in. A lot more appealing. Exact same spec but with non met paint. . Current car doesn't have lumbar support & it's absolutely killing my back.

Audi were supposed to send me figures on a demo a5 at 2.9% apr... Still waiting.

Just noticed on quote that they've included shortfall insurance @ €695, tyre ins @ €498 & Smart (don't know what that is) @ €399. That's a lot of extras! I don't think the shortfall insurance was always that expensive?

That 475pm sounds a lot better, and metallic won't break the bank.
The A5 is being replaced so would surely not be a great bet residually.
I'm frankly amazed at the low ball offers you're getting for your car.
Would you consider the new 5 series?
Sounds like similar money to what you're spending and would be more comfortable refined car. A new model 520d se would hold its value reasonably well I would have thought.

Probably not to be honest. I always saw them as daddy cars (admittedly very nice daddy cars)! A coupe is last fun car before growing up 😂

Is it the 4 Series GC you're interested in?

    No, the 2 door coupe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,679 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Sorry I assumed the gran coupe. 5 series not comparable to the coupe at all. New a5 coupe will hardly be available at low Apr I guess but looks lovely too.
Looks like you will take a big hit if you change unfortunately
