Struggling to get a job, feel worthless

Not sure where else to post this. I've been applying for so many jobs getting nowhere and I'm becoming so disheartened. I'm a qualified Beauty therapist but to be honest at this stage I'd do any job. I've been applying to tescos, penneys, etc and I'm not even getting interviews. I've had one interview so far which went okay but I didn't get the job. I have seen cleaning jobs that require years experience and I don't get it. I'm a hardworker I'd be willing to start from the bottom but no one will give me a chance.

I see posts on Facebook about people on jobseekers being lazy and purposely on the dole. I genuinely don't want to be on jobseekers I'm embarrassed being on it. I can feel myself getting more and more depressed and anxious the longer im looking and getting nowhere. I don't really have much to live for, at least I feel that way at the moment. I went to charity shops looking to volunteer but even they are full up.

I suppose I'm just looking for advice if anyone else has been in this situation.

Would you do personal house calls for make up and that? Retail should be busy for the festive season too. Keep trying anyway, I'm sure someone will appreciate your talents.

Have you considered putting your name into temp agencies. They can give advise on cv and plenty of places require temp work which would flesh out a cv and also give you a sense of purpose

That's a good idea, as well why don't u approach hairdressers and see could u get any work through them - I know for communions and weddings etc I'd love to be able to get hair and make up done under the same roof

That is a good idea the only thing is I'm more qualified in beauty treatments such as facials, massages than makeup. I had thought about going freelance but the money I'd need to buy the equipment I just couldn't afford it.

I know how you feel, its so tough ive a level 8 degree, fetac 5 courses, online courses, 8 years of volunteer work, even worked all Summer for under 2 euro an hour trying to get experience and hoping it would lead to real employment, I cant even get a job in a pub collecting glasses, its extremely disheartening but unfortunately its all about who you know not what you know, particularly if youre anywhere outside a city.

My only advice is to save every spare cent of your social welfare, ive managed to save a good amount in just a few months, I try to get 100 into the credit union every month, sometimes I only get 30 or 40 in but it builds up, you can eventually invest it in a course or setting up some freelance work or whatever you need to help you on your feet, even if its just a fallback, saving is so important.

If you go down to fas and ask to chat to someone, they can give you 500 euro towards a course if youre likely to get employment out of it or they can give you a grant towards setting up your own business and you'll get to keep your social welfare on top of this, they can set you up with a ce scheme or work placement in a beauticians. If I was in your position with a beauty qualification id contact some Holistic and Thai massage therapists who usually work independently or own small businesses with their own staff and id ask if I could work for free for a few weeks to gain experience. They will more likely give you the opportunity, this way youre making contacts, gaining references and filling gaps in your cv, they might even offer you employment. Ive a friend who did this, she volunteered her time with a thai masseuse and learned so much. It might not work out but its worth a shot, they can only say no.

Maybe if you added onto your qualifications with a makeup course ect, it might increase your chances.

Don't give up whatever you do, that's the main thing. I had six months of unemployment last year and like yourself not getting anywhere. Then found a job advertised in a local paper, applied, got an interview and got the job within the week.

My advice would be gear your CV to whatever job you're applying for. Also go into shops in person, ask to see the manager and hand them your CV, sometimes this will work because they can see what you're like and get a good feel off you.

Ignore the people who are knocking jobseekers. It's paid exactly for people like you who are seeking work and can't find it. It's not as easy as some would like to think.

    Best of luck.

Broaden your horizons would you try getting on a cruise ship? Try hotels that may not offer your services. Ask them have they a spare room and could they offer your services to customers it may not be regular work in the beginning but it's a headstart.
You really need to find a way of getting your own products and equipment. Maybe ask a brand to sponsor you?

If you are struggling to get interviews, then your CV may be the cause.

I don't mean your qualifications and experience but your actual CV. Is it well presented, easy to read, concise etc.? Do you mention qualities that you have which would be beneficial to the position?

A decent cover letter also goes a long way. If you are applying for a few positions, the structure of the cover letter will generally be the same however the content should be altered to suit the role.

Is there someone who could look at this for you?

In the meantime learn a skill or a language, all my feelings of worthlessness have stemmed from having a job, in short, there's only one type of job I want to do (driving Trains), it's nigh on impossible to get into and have spent 25 years trying to get it to no avail, hence I've been a fish out of water my entire working life, there's more to life than work.

Don't feel bad about it. Jobs aren't given out on merit. And you're no worse than people with jobs. Most jobs are extremely easy and could be mastered within 6 months.

And jobseekers is set up for jobseekers, and you're seeking a job, so take it away and don't feel any guilt. I'm glad it exists and I'm happy that at least some of my tax goes to such a useful humane thing.
