Room divider type furniture

    Hi

we have just completed an extension to our kitchen. The new kitchen has 2 steps down to a sitting area/back door but the steps only run along part of the split. The plan was to have a bookcase type piece of furniture along the other area so as to stop people going through that area. And to also save anyone sitting at the dining table falling back over the edge.

I was just going to go for the Kallax style bookcase from Ikea

But now herself wants something more fashionable, bespoke even!

    Anyone got any ideas?
It needs to be about 6 feet long and we don't want it too high or it will block the view out to the garden from the dining table/kitchen area (so about 4 foot high max).
As see through as possible would also be a major factor.

I've been googling a fair bit but nothing jumping out at me.

    thanks

Could you build a low wall with an indoor garden on top?

Thats a fairly radical idea! But not for me, thanks anyways

I'm visualising a line of window boxes with a few herbs and maybe some lettuce on top of a bog standard wall. Wouldn't have thought it was that radical.

Was thinking of something similar to divide and open plan kitchen/living area - came across this recently which looks nice and can customise the size etc.

A bit out there maybe, but would suspended shelving be suitable. I know somebody who bought this for their shop as an interior division and I thought it looked v. well :) The clear shelves really let the light through.

    Nice idea.
But we have a scatter of kids. 1 of the functions of the furniture piece will be to stop them from using that route or jumping off of the steps. I could see them using those shelves Tarzan like!
