Could anyone point me in the direction for one of these?

Its years since we had a dog,and its a job I am not looking forward to,but I remember the last one I had was of questionable quality (it didnt trim very cleanly).Bigger dog this time too(a lab)any suggestions?

Flashlight to make sure I dont get too close to the quick?Hopefully I wont need it where is the best place to get styptic powder?

I order grooming stuff from Christie's Direct - they have a good range of nail clippers and styptic powders/gels

I have never found a pair of animal nail clippers that I've been really confident with.

I use toe nail clippers on both dogs and cats (same as regular human nail clippers but bigger and more sturdy) as I find you can be much, much more precise with them.

(Did the cats last night actually)

These are the best ones I have used. Gets through my GSDs nails like butter. http://www.christiesdirect.com/en/Groom-Professional-Nail-Clippers/m-1095.aspx

^^^ They are the only job for a bigger dog.
Op, proceed with great care. If you can't see the quick due to dark nails, I would be inclined to just shave a small sliver off at a time, checking each time for the remotest sign of pinkness... You're better off leaving the nails a bit long and never needing the styptic powder... It might help heal the physical wound but it'll do nowt for the lifelong mental block about having the nails cut of you get it wrong just once!

Kathleen37, I find the human toe nail clippers are great for small nails, no doubt about it... But they simply don't open wide enough to get a bigger dog's claw into them!

I used to work at PetShopOnline and customers would talk about these http://www.petshoponline.ie/index.php/guillotine-nail-clipper.html working great. I don't know if they would work in your case, but it's another option.

I have used this type before and from my experience they have always been pretty blunt and not the easiest to control how much you're taking off if your dog fidgets. Just my experience though.

Same as VonVix, I wouldn't rate these at all. Fiddly feckers and inclined not to be sharp enough. Also inclined to trap the nail if you don't cut through it at the first attempt... Cue panicking, unhappy dog with nail clippers trapped on his toe :o

I got a great set in Mr Price of all places! They're smaller than what I'd normally get but Bailey tolerates them much better than the larger size which I've always gotten before... although I tend to grind his more than clip them as he has sore wrists and toes sometimes and it's less painful for him. The smaller ones are perfect for shaving and shaping the nail if you use the alternative cut line ;) and have a willing participant like Lucy lol!

These are brilliant for small to medium sized dogs (and cats)... You can snip the nails almost without the dog noticing, and they're perfect for one sliver at a time with bigger dogs.
