AA breakdown cover minimum contract?

My own car is off the road at the moment and I need to use my mother's one for a bit.

The insurance I have on my own car with Aviva (3rd party fire + theft) covers me to drive other cars, but I doubt it extend my breakdown cover to other cars too?

Would it be possible to get short term breakdown cover on my mother's car for the period I'm driving it? I was looking at the AA's €8.25 pm cover but I can't find any mention of the contract length? Surely it's not a 30 day rolling contract?

If you read the terms and conditions they say

Monthly Payments for Membership are based on a minimum of 12 consecutive monthly.
If your Direct Debit is cancelled, you must pay the balance of the
outstanding month(s) in that Membership year.

Good thinking, I see what you're planning there :D:D

There are many others that offer equivalent products in Ireland. I have the Nationwide from AXA - used them recently when I got a flat and realised I'm missing the wrench; they showed up in less than 25' (Dublin).

Right. That makes a lot more sense!

Are there any companies that will let you take out a 12 month breakdown service AFTER you've broken down? I think the AA do this in the UK (or used to), not sure about Ireland though.

Not sure, but depending on the breakdown.. it can happen after you get the membership :P

I wouldn't put too much value on the AA breakdown cover as an essential, basically they will get you going if the problem is easily fixed on the roadside like a flat battery or puncture, other than that they will have to tow it to a dealer who can fix a major problem. It might be better to put €100 away to pay for a tow truck to bring it to a dealer for fixing.

Well, if the car is prone to breakdowns or if the failure is hard to fix and will potentially let you down anytime, 60e for a year is better than 100e for one instance!

Terms and conditions here for the AA say you can call out for assistance 24 hours after signing up.
It makes sense as everyone would just sign up when they break down.

Just temporary transfer your insurance on to the car while you are using it. All added benefits should transfer with it.
