have a corded Makita drill which isn't very old. In anycase the chuck was useless since the day I bought it and gradually got worse. I now need to replace it and bit just spins in chuck and you cannot tighten it enough as it slips.

I notice you can buy replacement chucks either keyed or keyless (like my battery drill). Half thinking of getting a keyless one or is this a bad idea?

Depends on what you are drilling.

I had a keyless chuck on a SDS drill that eventually became impossible to tighten without a spanner and stilson any time I drilled steel. Changed it for a keyed chuck recently and so far so good.

If you're doing heavy work go for keyed chuck. The warning on my SDS drill said 'chuck was not to be used for masonary'.......
