    Possibly the flue.

I had a multi flue stove that would fill the room with smoke if the door was opened or left stove open when starting the fire. It took me a while to work out the problem which was a baffle plate that was not sitting in the correct position. Once I repositioned the baffle it was fine. The baffle is the metal plate inside the stove at the top.

The flue from the old oil stove more than likely isn't suitable for solid fuel it could have collapsed causing the smoke
Solid fuel flue has to be rated for over
    400 degrees
Oil will be half of that
