The thing is why are you getting into them. Showing or selling rams etc.
Showing ya'll need to get a breed that's kinda popular in your area.

Bred pedigrees here for a good few years, one of the less common breeds, Vendeen, It was hard to source stock of outside breeding lines and the breed got very close bred. Sheep Irelands rating of imported stock has ensured that importing is a sure way to devalue your stock.
    Anyway it's an interesting hobby
On your question Charolais, if I was doing it again, I'd probably still go Vendeen, even though when I started, there was few around and had to promote really strong to get a customer base, If you go for a common breed, there's a breeder at every crossroads and it's a struggle to compete......and expensive to start with the popular breed...we were always dealing in stock that was only worth a small bit over crossbred value.

Suppose you'd have to start with a breed that you liked working with. Some of the flighty breed ewes must be challenging at lambing.

    Dylan
Keep a million miles away, it is total over done and something like only 35 per cent of Rams sold is purebred the rest are dealers and crossbreed.
