Doesnt matter if boiler is on or off, trv is just a thermostat on the radiator which controls the radiators temperature. Just turn it to 0 and back to full a few times, no need to leave it for any amount of time

So what can I do to fix it without calling someone out ,is it possible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 667 ✭✭✭alexonhisown

If that didnt work, try turning off all the other rads, might as well try a few things before having to ring a plumber

Turn it to 5, give metal part a few taps of a spanner of something similar.
If that doesn't work, take off the head and you'll see a little pin, pull it with a pliers to free it.

Trv is the one in pic 2, it might not say "5" some have dots, some have lines, cant see what yours is, just turn it in each direction, and if you look at the video i suggested above, it will show you how to check if valve is stuck

When I turned it just there now after reading ur message it kinda got stuck between two and three (lines) is that an indication

Sometimes mine are a bit stiff but i just have to put a bit more pressure when turning it, but dont force it

one of mine didnt work after the summer, but it was actually the other end of the rad that was closed (dont know how that happened). Again, the guy in the video will explain that

TRV's can be a problem if the radiator is turned off for a while.

The head of the valve can be removed by unscrewing the silver ring between the setting knob and the body of the valve. As you take it off, remember the position that the temperature indicator pin is at, it will need to go back on in the same position, the head unit will only fit in certain positions.

When the head is removed, there will be a small pin at the end of the valve, try pushing on it with something like a teaspoon. If the pin does not move in and out, it's stuck, (quite common), and will need to be freed.

With a pair of pliers, carefully pull on the pin to pull it out no more than 2 or 3 mm, if you pull it too hard or too far, it may come out of the valve, and depending on the make, you may get water leaking from the pin location. Usually, as you pull on it, the first mm or so will free it, and you can make sure it's free by then pushing on it again with the spoon and making sure it moves in and out freely. Do this several times, and usually, after 2 or 3 presses, it will be moving freely.

Once it's moving freely, put the operating head back on and re secure the ring that holds it in place, and all should now be well.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
