We have the crap ones so have you got ones that turned out to be imaginative or useful especially from someone you didn't expect it from?

My mother-in-law took me by surprise a few years back and bought me "The Reader's Digest DIY manual." She had moved house and it was a nice hint that her new gaff needed to be dragged out of the 80's. I ended up doing most of the work anyway. My wallpapering skills certainly improved and I dabbled in carpentry for the first time and did a decent job of a laminate floor.

Great book to explain the workings of various home systems but a lot of it I'd leave to a pro. Nice thought though and quite useful. She was quite the cute hoor. :)

I got a presentation box of 20 or 25 yr old whiskey which has been sitting in my corner press being admired for the past ten years. Was badly in need of a special gift last eeek when funds were low so regifted it which really bailed me out and gave HUGE delight to the birthday boy.

I'd love to have tried it though - but no occasion ever seemed special enough .

Every year I get a litre bottle of Jameson from my son. I find it a really useful resource in helping me educate people on the internet.

They should be due for a wash any day now too?

A belt with a bottle opener under the buckle.
I still have it 10 years on and it's a lifesaver at parties.
Alas, the occasion to wear a canvas belt is getting fewer and fewer but when it's dress down Friday in work and there's impromptu beers, its handy to have.

Why not a whole range of car-related cooking equipment?

In france this year I saw the ultimate car plug in device. An espresso machine. Not one of these stupid nespresso machines that take stupid pods. A full on espresso machine for your car.

I got a Mighty Wallet for Christmas last year off someone. It's an extremely lightweight wallet made out of a material they use on building sites called tyvek. It feels like paper but is extremely durable and waterproof, I was very skeptical at first but a year later it's still holding up. You can get a load of different designs as well. Great little gift.

Warp the sandwich in tin foil and use the wire from a coat hanger to hold it against the exhaust manifold.

Have one, takes forever barely 3 cups from a 4Ah battery...currently in dust collection mode with all the other ****e I buy that I manage to convince myself will be useful.

The 4" makita battery grinder on the other hand is a gift of a thing :)

Only works if you have cruise control and can run fast enough to keep up with the car.

That thing that looks like a pen knife but holds your key and even a little memory key to store small amounts of pornography on.

A biscuit jar would be very useful, especially if it was in the shape of a penguin and it quacked every time you opened it.

    ...and a helicopter.

Judging from the reviews, thus has certainly been a useful and popular gift over the years.

I'll tell you about the best present I ever got.

My last xmas living at home was in 2006, my Mum gave me a Crucifix on a chain. She was brutal to me, she was a violent horrible woman but with that gesture I think she tried to apologise to me and repent her sins.

As an atheist who was confirmed into the RCC I scoffed at it at the time. But now, 10 years on, it means more to me than anything. I wear it at all times, concealed underneath my regular clothing.
