Selling the car with motor tax arrears

I'm trying to sell my car, although there is no tax on it since June. Will I be still liable for that tax even after selling it? I know the buyer won't have to pay my arrears, but what about me?

Not saying I know anything about it, or that I've ever heard of it being done...

But there was a rumour years ago, that people within the same stable were 'selling' cars to eachother to use this to their advantage...

The current system is only in since 2013, and yeah people do change ownership to avoid arrears. It's not illegal.
Driving without tax is the only issue I can see.

I personally know people that have done it, I'm wondering if that loophole hasn't been fixed.

It's not a loophole, if your using the car while untaxed your fined or car is seized, not using the car there's no fine if you sell it on.

    That's assuming you're caught!

There was a focus parked in Tesco last night with no tax insurance or nct showing. 2 gardai walked right past the front of it twice in to get the messages.

As above by Atlantic Dawn. It's not a "Loophole".
It has been this way since motor tax was first introduced many, many years ago.
Any arrears expire when ownership is changed.
Why should 'they' suddenly to decide to change a decades-old system now ?

Yes that's the problem, there needs to be an ANPR network on all major roads and owners of cars found untaxed on these roads heavily fined.

As a prospective buyer how do you take it for a test drive (legally) without tax?

    Legally....you can't.

You arrange for the car to be towed to private land, where you have permission to drive and you do your test drive there, without the need for motor tax. Of course, exactly zero people would do this.

I'm guessing less than zero people would actually do this. From looking at these posts it appears that motor tax is practically optional given the non-enforcement. Begs the question why anyone would bother paying it in the first place.
