Hi I'm new to farming. I'm 35 and have set up a small holding farm (3 acres) over the last year in north Wexford with pigs, sheep, goats and chickens. I have my heard numbers etc.. but I'm trying to find out if I am able to apply or qualify for any farming payments or grants. Rang the department of agriculture this morning to inquire but they couldn't help. She told me to contact an agri advisor either in Teagasc or my local department of agriculture office. I then contacted both departments to be told that they wouldn't be able to help or advise me. Any advise out there would be greatly appreciated.

Stonerwins - what reason(s) did they give for not being able to help or advise?  In the same position myself trying to get going with 14 acres.  Neighbours all insist there are schemes I can join for advice, and various grants to help set-up costs..........but like yourself, every attempt turns out to be a dead end.  Can anyone advise on how to start the process of engaging with agencies, after the herd-number is obtained? I am not seeking hand-outs or subsidies.  Only interest is a GLAS assistance for rebuilding of collapsed stone walls and advice on bringing long-neglected fields back to good heart.

Do you have a herd number Chisler?

If you do, then you can apply for GLAS... But the closing date for GLAS is Dec 15th, so getting a herd number between now and then is prob not feasible...

I only have similar acreage to you, and am going to apply for GLAS. Let me know and I can send you some more details, on what I'm planning on doing in GLAS - not saying its a good plan now, but happy to share ;)

There must be a planner in your area. Have you a basic payment application (BPS) made this year?

As far as I know you have to have a minimum of 5 hectares to qualify for BPS

This is the kind of thing I need to get clear and on which there are so many different "takes"!  Thank you Brian.  Would you recommend a good source of sound information for people starting out?

Username John I am very interested to discuss ideas with you and would be grateful for your input.  No I have not got the Herd Number yet!  Application form still on my desk (ignorant that there was a cut-off date!!!!) as I've been renovating the cottage this past couple of years and needed to get that out of the way before turning to the land.

Be careful when you are applying for your heard number, don't leave it till the last min if you need your number soon. I applied for my pig number last year, only took 4 weeks from when the department of agriculture came out to verify everything. Applied for sheep number this year and it took 7 MONTHS!!! before I got the number in the post, due to my application being "lost" then they lost my folio maps.
