Hard to tell... are they as popular as they were during the American Idiot days?

    Is this a game?

I'll go for 5 Days, 7 Hours... and 22 minutes!

    :)

Yeah, hard to know... probably gained a lot more fans I reckon.

I saw them play The Ambassador just before the release of American Idiot... and they were excellent!

But their new stuff is absolute tosh IMO.

I saw them when they played The Point in 2005, tickets were sold out in less than two days from what I can remember. That was probably the height of their popularity.

Their only decent album is Dookie. Maybe American Idiot as well just for the nostalgia.

Hard to believe they've essentially released five studio albums since American Idiot! I reckon some popularity will have waned since then. That being said I'd advise anyone hoping to get tix to be on the button on Friday

Rancid being in support will boost attendance too. I have seen Greenday 3 times and they were always outstanding live. I wasn't pushed though till I saw Rancid were the support. I hope it doesn't sell out quick.

They peaked in popularity around 1995, and have lost fans since imo

Yet their biggest shows were in the last 5 years including stadiums?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,155 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Ya they definitely didn't peek in 1995. In the early to mid 2000's they were selling out stadiums all over the world. They probably aren't as big with the casual fans that just liked American Idiot but would still have a huge fanbase.

Almost an hour and there are tickets still available.
Anes have to agree, Dookie is "unreal".
Has anyone mentioned that the gig is on a Thursday. I think this will effect sales slightly.
Did anyone see that film Billy Joe Armstrong did recently. It was really bad.
These guys should be playing Croke Park. Where did it all go wrong :-(

    They won't.

Very very few concerts actually sell out these days.

Have you noticed ppl are not getting away with selling on tickets at high prices on Adverts and DoneDeal any more. They have really put the foot down.

There is a green day ticket up on done deal for 100 euro and the tickets aren't even sold out.

    The seller is some twit!!!

Whatever people think about them jumping the easy bandwagon of getting political with American Idiot (that was a catchy tune, at least) and the current respectability they now have, they were and always will be a great live band.

Popularity, probably, yeah. They use to always put a smile on me face they then brought out a video and had some tunnnneees! Got pompous later, but, that is what happens when one grows up.

Nah, they have become incredibly "popular" at least in the commercial sense. Bha, they have worked hard for it, so good luck to them. They work hard, 5 albums and loads of touring since A.I.

As you know , all bands go through cycles. From 1999-2006 it was all about U2 (well from 2000 onwards) and the return of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Neither band could do no wrong from the start of the 2000's . Are either as "popular" now? (obviously their concerts do well)

Really? (haven't been to a gig in years - so probably answered by own question :P)

How come? Price of tickets? People not bothered?

I wouldnt agree with that. Bruno Mars sold out last month in 10mins and they launched the second date straight away which again sold out quickly.
I was very surprised to hear that Drake is one of the most anticipated gigs of Dublin next year. Can't say I could sit through one of his songs.

As for Greenday, they were a revolution in the mid 90's. I was there WOOOP WOOOP. Dookie album and Oasis Defiantly Maybe album both released in 1994 (i think). I still listen to both regularly.

Getting really depressed now. MTV, some channel back then. Weezer had "Buddy Holly" then as well. Kurt Coban dies, and there is a revival in Independent guitar music on both sides of the Atlantic.

I bought tickets about a half hour ago they were still available. If I don't end up going I'll pass on the tickets at face value.

But how often would you hear any Green Day songs on the radio? Not that often. Bruno Mars and Drake are targeted at a teen and early Twenties audience through pop music, and would be played often and with a huge fanbase. Green Day, as popular as they were, won't have that kind of draw and will be lucky to sell this one completely. They'll also have fans of Rancid showing up for it, which helps.

    Sold out as of today

Just remember that it may well not be sold out, if ticket sales are very slow MCD would put out the 'Sold out' signs, then come February will announce 'Limited number of tickets available for this gig'. The hype will sell the rest

Not saying they're doing it in this instance but it has been known

it's all about supply and demand. When supply is limited, demand increases (and vice versa). Book early to avoid disappointment and all that......
