Password given last time I signed on- what is it used for?

2 weeks ago, I signed on for the dole. The queue was long and slow-moving; I queued for an hour and the staff even stayed on an extra 30 minutes longer than normal.

When I finally got to the counter, I got an apology for the delay and got an explanation (of sorts) as to the long delay: everybody who signed on was getting a password.

This was sent to my phone, at the counter, and I then had to input it to the keypad, before signing on.

I was so stressed by the thought that I might not get to sign in on time, and in such a hurry to leave, that I didn't really take on board what the password is used for, exactly.

I was told it was for some Jobs website and some other things. Does anybody know what it can be used for? I work an odd day here and there- can I use this password somewhere so I can send my local SW office the details automatically, rather than emailing them?
