    A horrendous challenge.
I went on it to see how much the fare from Sallins to Connolly Station is and it is suggesting over €20! As for the timetable it won't give details of direct trains and instead suggests changing at Heuston. How the hell does that work? If someone could tell me the cost and frequency of the trains I would be obliged

Thanks for that but to describe that timetable as labrynthine is to give it a compliment. Utterly useless.
From my reading of it the only train running from Sallins to Connolly in the morning is the 9.19AM. The timetable suggests I get a train to Heuston then get a bus or a Luas to Connolly! However, on closer inspection, with no assistance from the designers, it's possible for me to get the 7.53AM to Heuston, but get off at Celbridge, hang around for 9 minutes then board the train to Connolly, similarly with the 8.19 to Heuston, get off at Celbridge and get the 8.35 to Connolly. However, as the timetable does not recognise that fact by putting the letter C next to it (for change train) would suggest that they do not consider that the one journey and would probably double the fare, which I still do not know what the cost is. Dreadful Who designs these timetables?

    Connolly to Sallins Mon-Friday
    16.49, 17.37, 18.25,

Again, thanks for that. But yet again on the return journey it is possible to get the 17.09 from Connolly, change at Celbridge and get on the 17.54 to Sallins. In addition one could get the 18.07 from Connolly, change at Celbridge and get on the 18.50 to Sallins. Therefore the timetable would read:
    Sallins to Connolly
    6.22
    7.08
    7.28
    7.53 Change at Celbridge
    8.19 Change at Celbridge
    9.19

    Connolly to Sallins
    16.49
    17.09 Change at Celbridge
    17.37
    18.07 Change at Celbridge
    18.25

I don't know about you, but the frequency of my service looks much fuller than the official one!

Use the apps if you can never the website

The Irish rail website won't give you fares half the time though the app won't either
Rail users Ireland has a good fare calculator

It really is incredible that the Official website does not provide fare information and that one is forced to go to a third party to get details. The only way you can get a fare from IE is by emailing them! It will come as no surprise that despite emailing them yesterday I am still awaiting a response.

You seem to be confusing Timetable with Journey Planner.

A timetable presents the full service for the lines and allows any potential user to work out possible connections for themselves.

It is not a document tailored to YOUR specific needs so it will not lead you through specific connections as these would be irrelevant to many other passengers.

What you appear to expect is provided by the journey planner, you put in your specific journey and it calculates the available options.

I do get that a timetable can be a little confusing at first glance for someone not used to reading one. What is not excusable are the supposed enthusiasts and internet experts thanking posts complaining that timetables are lacking for not including journey specific connection information that they have no business providing in the first place.

Yes and you should also be aware connections are not certain so why should they mislead people.

    Quite.
However, airlines are able to offer a facility whereby connections have to be made and everyone is aware that delays might affect the outcome, but the information is still proferred.

yeah and is there any time saving with train? doesnt even bring most people where they want to go either, i.e the city centre, having to get off and take the luas, its a joke!

Getting silly now, some airlines operate as transit and others P2P.

well in my case I'm going to be hungover or possibly still in the bin on Sunday on the return,
I want to book Dublin to Westport for next weekend with a bike,
website won't let me select a seat as required or a bike space let alone allocate a seat when I choose that instead?
It's off-peak hours too which shouldn't be a problem, except all of the seats are greyed out???

EDIT: just searched for Irish Rail in the play store, came back with "Bone Doctor Wrist Surgery" app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oxo.wrist.surgery.doctor haha
