Oil in combustion chamber

So my banger is apparently leaking oil into the combustion chamber and burning it i.e every 4 weeks I'm filling it up, when I asked my mechanic a price he advised its a full engine restore.....even I know thats pricey....was wondering is there a cheaper option or stop gap for a few months as I planned on getting another car in the summer/autumn.

Just keep putting oil in to it.

Any long term effects of doing that? Ive a 30 min drive in the morning/evening and dont want a break down etc.

When you say filling it every 4 weeks, how much does it take?

Depending how much I've driven around 1.5 litres, I never wait until the oil light comes on though.

You shouldn't even let it past half a litre tbh, top it up once or twice a week if needs be.

If its a banger as you say, there no point doing anything major. There is no easy fix, just buy some cheap oil in bulk to keep you going till its time to change next year. Doing anything to the engine would not make financial sense unless you were keeping the car long term, and even them it probably would not makes sense if its cheap car.

Your biggest worry is next NCT it will likely fail.

Sounds like piston rings have failed. It's a bit of a job already. If your anyway handy you could give it a go, but it's a big job. Engine out and fully strip down to get all the components out.

Another option would be to source a second hand engine. We could give more advise if you told us the car and year.

It's probably down to wear, although it might be a major oil leak? Is compression an issue?

A few cars cannot be rebuilt on the bottom end. The 1.2 3 cylinders will warp the block if the crank is removed.

If car is a banger then I wouldn't put more money into it.
Just keep filling with oil every time you put petrol in and wait for it to fail NCT or something else breaks.

Don't worry I started that already was only when I noticed a few weeks ago that the oil had depleted after 4 weeks and got my mechanic to look.

More than likely valve stem seals.

Buy a bottle of no smoke from the motor factors the next time you're buying your oil. It should help reduce the rate at which the engine is combusting the oil

what spec oil are you using?? 5w30 or that.. if so.. get 10w40 and a bardhal no smoke.. should make a big difference..
and if it is 10w40 then get a 10w40 for older high mileage cars..slight bit thicker but not enough to cause issues...

What oil are you using ? Maybe a slightly thicker oil .

I love that people are diagnosing piston rings failing before knowing what car it was. We still don't know what engine is in the civic.

Definatley valve stems. However get a leak down test done on it if your really interested in keeping it. That will tell you where your leaking oil in.
If your rings were on the way you would be having issues starting and all sorts of horrendous back pressure.

No other issues that I know of, new o2 sensor in at the weekend and its flying along much better petrol consumption too, it's one of those bangers thats lovely to drive, leather seats etc.

Get somebody to drive behind you and see if there's much blue smoke coming out.

Valve stems really require the head to be removed to do. I'm sure somebody has a way of doing them with the head on but the correct way is head off etc. So it's not cheap.

The new o2 sensor won't be long for the world if your burning oil all over it.

The awy and azq fitted in Fabia, polo, Ibiza etc.

There is also a 4 cylinder Ford engine in focus and fiestas in which bottom end parts are not available. Short block only. Don't recall which one though.

Its a civic shes going to burn oil just keep lashing it in, you should see the amount of empty oil cans in my boot. It will run forever once you keep the oil topped up.

I'd be putting in about 1 liter every 800-1000 miles, not so bad. It would't burn much if you don't put the foot down, but that is fairly hard!

I always thought the short block is the bottom end. Basically anything minus the head and sump?

Not surprised about the VAG engine.

Yep. Can't buy pistons, rings, crank shells etc. Only supplied as complete block with crank and pistons fitted.
