Open Competition Eligibility

Does anyone know what the rules are regarding eligibility for open competitions for 2017? I've just returned from abroad and my old handicap may still be valid as I was away for less than 2 years. Am I correct in thinking that I need to play three rounds at my new home club to be eligible for open competitions next year? Do these need to be qualifying rounds or can I play three rounds with a member and have a card marked?

My understanding of the criteria is that you need to have played in 3 qualifying competitions in the previous 12 months of the date you are playing in the open.

Depending on how long you have not been a member you could be ok.

Rule 26.1 of the latest CONGU book says that the 'c' status holds for the year of resignation and the next calandar year.

If it has been longer you could be asked to put in 3 new cards for a new handicap. These will stand effectively as qualifing rounds and will allow a 'c' status handicap to be given which will allow you to play in opens.

your handicap won't still be valid as it is over 2 years. I think it has to be within 6 months.
but it will be taken into account when you go for a new handicap.

Lads does a person coming into a club, getting his c status through the 3 "qualifying" cards he has submitted then become eligible for interclub the following season. We recently had someone very handy join who had not played in 18 months because of injury and got his handicap the week we finished qualifying comps.

'c' status and entry for interclub competitions are seperate you would need to lookup the specific interclub competition in the GUI tournament conditions book for eligibility. This would usually have been sent out a few months ago with the entry forms. I think it is on the GUI website somewhere as well.

As regards regaining handicap the wording of the latest CONGU guidelines (2016-2018)have changed.

Rule (26.1) was previously 6 months. It is now the calendar year of resignation and the next full calendar year. The op said he had been away less than 2 years so this may apply if the timing is right.
Outside of this then as per the normal Rule (16) three cards have to be handed in.

Thanks for responses. As it was less than 2 years my old h/c is still active, but my new club are going to look at it. As long as I play 3 qualifying rounds, I'll be eligible for open comps next year.

Re the interclub question above, the requirement is for four qualifying rounds at your home course. Given that your club's qualifying comps have finished, he won't be eligible for anything except senior cup and barton shield.

The four qualifying comp requirement for GUI events can be played at any course, not just your home course.
The 3 qualifying comp requirement for open comps, must be played at your home course, but it's important to note, clubs have the ability to override this requirement and give a competition "c" status to a new member, who hasn't had the opportunity to play 3 comps in the previous year.

That's correct, thanks for clarifying - I had misread the tournament conditions. In that case, are there any qualifying events still going on?

Links courses usually. Played one in Ballyliffin a couple of weeks ago.

Have a look the GUI website for open comps, and phone the club beforehand to confirm it's qualifying.
