Unscrewing something with a missing thread

Hi Folks, I am replacing a toilet valve and ball, I am trying to unscrew the final piece, but its making a clicking sound, so I presume there is a thread missing. Have attached a photo. Is there an easy way to get this piece of plastic unscrewed? Thanks in advance.

open the nut on the outside of the cistern and change the full valve
